About Michelle

I have taught ESL and test prep both here in Atlanta and abroad. I have an MA in applied linguistics/ESL and a BA in journalism. Prior to completing my MA, I worked in corporate communications for 15 years. My professional duties included writing, editing and proofreading publications, client correspondence and press releases, and making oral presentations. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I teach academic ESL for international students at Mercer University's English Language Institute. This includes all levels of writing, reading, listening, and speaking. I specialize in grammar and English for business purposes. Prior to becoming an ESL teacher, I worked for about ten years as a sales and marketing professional.

I completed my MA in applied linguistics/ESL with a 4.0 (straight A) grade point average. Courses included: Sound Systems of English, Approaches to Teaching ESL/EFL, General Linguistics, English Grammar for ESL Teachers, Intercultural Communication, Practicum, Sociolinguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Second Language Testing and Assessment, Materials Design and Development, Pragmatics in the Language Classroom, and Technology in the Language Classroom.

At Georgia State University, I taught classes in the Intensive English Program, and also a Listening/Speaking class for international graduate students. Outside of school, I have taught basic survival level and conversational English to adults and teenagers. I currently teach Advanced Grammar and Vocabulary Acquisition at Mercer University, as well as several ESL classes and TOEFL Test Prep classes at a private language school.

Grammar

I have been teaching ESL at a university level for over six years. Grammar is my specialty. While working on my master's degree in applied linguistics, I also worked as a research assistant, analyzing grammar corpora of native and non-native speakers. In addition, I have a bachelor's degree in journalism.

Proofreading

I currently work part-time freelance as a proofreader/editor.

TOEFL

As an ESL lecturer at Mercer University in Atlanta, I frequently teach TOEFL test prep classes. Also, while I was working on master's in applied linguistics, we studied the TOEFL in depth, including best practices for teaching TOEFL test courses which are in extremely high demand these days. In addition, I have worked as a rater on the writing portion.

Writing
