About Susan

After twenty years of teaching at all levels, I effectively tutor students and achieve quick success in the following areas: reading writing, mathematics, SAT/ACT exams, study skills, dyslexia support services, Orton-Gillingham Method reading recovery, English as a Second Language (ESL), learning techniques for autistic students, and online tutoring systems (Plato, USA Learns, Wyzant).

Developing life-long learners and assisting students with reading delays has been the focus of my 20-year career. Successful students organize information and then use applied practice techniques to retain and synthesize this knowledge in their lives. I am committed to assisting students to achieve these skills and to invest in themselves.

Currently, I am an adjunct professor at Lanier Technical College teaching mathematics and English. Also, I proctor the SAT and ACT exams. In addition, I have a reading teacher license and specialize in helping dyslexic students attain their academic goals. Besides being a published writer and editor, I also serve as a speaker regarding educational issues.

Besides teaching, I ride with my horse, walk my dogs, and play guitar.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

Over the last 15 years, I have taught dyslexic students in a reading lab and screened for dyslexia for a school district. I use the Orton-Gillingham method and supplement it with Read Naturally and a computer program called Fast Forward. Using multi-sensory techniques helps students acquire phonemic awareness and comprehension. Staying current on brain research also shape my choices in material and presentation. Currently, I am privately tutoring dyslexic students in three counties.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a k-12 certification for teaching reading and am trained in the Orton-Gillingham Method of reading recovery. In addition, I have worked with autistic, deaf, and dyslexic elementary students. I truly enjoy working with elementary students, especially in reading.

Reading

Serving dyslexic, delayed, and disinterested readers, I am a Reading and English teacher trained in the Orton Gillingham Method, Wilson Method, and MTA (Multi-sensory Learning Approach).
Phonemic awareness, fluency, accuracy, and comprehension are the goals of my lesson plans. The components of my lessons are research-based and engaging activities to keep a student's attention and increase the enjoyment of reading.

Study Skills

I am a reading teacher who also taught study skills at the high school and middle school levels.

Mind maps and graphic organizers are important to a student's development of study skills. Also, Cornell notes are invaluable in a student's career.

Just getting a student to organize their folder seems to work wonders for them. There are other little tips, like reading non-fiction with a different technique, that will help a student be more successful in the classroom.
