I am a retired English Teacher and Guidance Counselor who served NJ Public Schools for 35 years. Having worked in a public school setting, I taught a great diversity of students of every socio-economic status and assisted them through a variety of personal difficulties, academic situations, and college planning. Having retired in 2006, I moved to Georgia to be closer to my three precious grandchildren.
Grandchildren have filled my life as a retired person, but I've also occupied myself by volunteering and working part-time as a Hebrew teacher in a religious school. Four years ago, I became the school's Hebrew Director. As a result of my contact with parents and students, love of music, and ability to read and chant Hebrew, I began to tutor students who are preparing to become Bar and Bat Mitzvah. Today, I tutor several students in Friday night and Shabbat morning prayers, Torah and haftarah. How fulfilling it is after several months of tutoring to see and hear these students on the bimah (pulpit) on their big day!!!!!
Love of grammar and writing is my thrust for tutoring students in Language Arts. I recently taught a student who was home schooled in grammar, writing, and literature. I"ve helped others prepare for GED and TOEFL.
My ability to teach and relate to youngsters, decode Hebrew, and love for chanting the tropes of the Torah and haftarah, are what inspires me to tutor. Students say that I make the experience of tutoring an enjoyable one!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught decoding of Hebrew in religious schools, as well as the Friday night and Shabbat morning prayers, and the chanting of Torah and haftarah tropes in my tutorial setting. I am also a lay leader in my congregation, meaning that I have conducted Friday night services on multiple occasions. While building confidence in the student, I do my best to make tutoring a fun experience!!
A retired English teacher, I taught literature, grammar, and writing in NJ Public Schools. I have found that the best writers are avid readers, that students who do well in grammar excel in the area of foreign languages, and that the best readers generally do well on standardized tests and in most school subjects. Those who are weak in the areas I mentioned need the help I can provide to strengthen their verbal skills and their performance in other academic areas.
