About Nathan

Every student learns differently and forges mental connections in a unique way. As a teacher, I understand that it is essential to think like the student, and convey ideas in a methodical fashion. I liken tutoring to the process of debugging a program. Every challenge is different from the last, and every misunderstanding must be addressed. Once you truly understand an idea, you can explain it in simple terms - build it yourself. I want to teach you, not just science, but how to think like a scientist.

As a recent graduate from the PhD program at UAB, I have extensive knowledge in Physics, Math, and programming as well as recent experience teaching and tutoring students in Physics. During the course of my studies, I taught more than 1000 students and received high praise for my ability to teach. I am approachable and very easy-going. I understand the difficult nature of the subject matter (I battled my way through 13 years of this stuff!), so I am always patient, and look for ways to suit an explanation to my audience.

During my undergraduate studies as a student at UNG, I tutored Math and Computer Science for several years, as well as Physics. I am probably overly passionate about all three of these subjects, and eager to share what I have learned.

Mathematics is the language of the Physical universe. Having worked through undergraduate and graduate level Physics courses, I have extensively utilized a large variety of mathematics. I use algebra, trigonometry, Calculus, differential equations, probability, discrete math, and linear algebra in physics calculation and even some of the programs I write.

I have taught well over 1000 students in Physics at UAB alone. During this time, I have had hundreds of hours of one-on-one time with students. Also, did I mention that I earned a PhD in Physics?

I love programming. This is the kind of thing I spend all of my spare time doing. The first language I ever touched was Java, and that was 14 years ago. Since then, I have also learned C, C++, Objective-C, and Lua. I have an intricate knowledge of the Java language. I can teach how to code properly and effectively. I will also focus heavily on learning how to take advantage of the API documentation from Oracle. In addition to this, I can teach you about the environment, and how to build a program into an executable Jar file.

I am looking forward to helping you in whatever way you need. I have flexible availability, and am willing to discuss a variety of meeting locations. I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
