Hello, my name is Shaun and I have been tutoring and teaching for many years. I lived overseas in a French-speaking country for most of my life, having gone there when I was 12 years old. I went to school there (in French with a French curriculum of study) and my husband is from there. We speak both French and English in our home and our children are totally bilingual in English and French. I have taught in many overseas schools since 1981 and have been teaching and tutoring since I returned to the United States in 2006. I was a preschool teacher for a number of years and incorporated French language instruction into the curricula I followed with much success and with the pleasure and approval of the children and their parents alike. I also have experience teaching English to non-English speakers, both children and adults. My method for teaching both French and English has a strong phonetic base and I posses the skills to explain the grammar of both languages in an easy, comprehensible way, so that all ages can understand. I have also done translation and interpretation, both from English to French and from French to English. I enjoy teaching both these languages to all ages and all levels. In addition to French, I am also experienced in teaching the different areas of Language Arts(Reading, Phonics, Spelling, Grammar)to Pre-K thru 2nd grade aged students, which I find very rewarding as well. By the end of her second lesson, Shaun had our two daughters (7 and 9) beginning to hold a very basic conversation in French. She is patient with the girls, who can have a lot of energy, and the three of them seem to be having a lot of fun each class.
My daughter loved "Miss Shaun" from the moment we opened our home to her. The first class definitely got her attention (she is 6 years old). They sang her first french song together and even took a verbal test after "Frere Jacques". She was so very proud that she actually understood what she was singing. I liked that Shaun wanted her not only to have fun but to actually understand what she was saying in English and in French. I sat in on the class and was very impressed with Shaun's ease of communication and fun loving spirit. It was a lot of fun learning how "R" is pronounced in French. "Air" with a raspy sound at end. I plan to have my son who is 4 start soon, but his attention span is about 10 minutes, so I appreciated Shaun's flexibility and willingness to have me let her know when he is ready to start . Awesome first class!!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught ESL/ESOL to both children and adults. I have done so in a classroom setting and as a personal in-home tutor. My experience teaching ESL/ESOL was gained by living overseas and working in different American schools and language schools and extends to many different non-English speaking nationalities: French Canadian, French, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Tunisian, Moroccan and French West African, as well as English-speaking nationalities that have a strong non-English speaking native language influence: Pakastani, Somali, Ethiopian, and Djiboutian. I have actually lived in many of the countries I mentioned and encountered the other nationalities in schools or diplomatic communities where I was living as well.
I have been speaking French since I was 12 years old. I went to a French school from 8th grade to 10th grade. This school was exclusively in French, with a French academic curriculum. My husband is from a French speaking country and French is spoken along with English equally in our home. My spoken, written and read French are excellent and my knowledge of French grammar and spelling is very good. I am a retired teacher who has taught French to English speakers and English to non-English speakers for many years, as well as Pre-k through 2nd grade, both here in the U.S. and overseas, where I lived, went to school and worked in several French speaking countries between 1970 and 2008. I have been involved in private tutoring since 2004 and I taught in a classroom setting between 1981 to 2009.
I have taught pre-k through 2nd grade native English reading using phonics for many years. I have been a private tutor for native Asian language students and have discovered that they learn English best when they have access to phonetic-based teaching while being immersed in English, because their native language is very heavily phonetically based. For teaching English to native French speakers or French to native English speakers, I have developed a personal phonetic system which is based on the sounds of the alphabet in both languages, which immensely helps with pronunciation. For example, to teach the pronunciation of the French word "tres" (which means "very" in English and is correctly written with an accent on the "e", which my computer doesn't have), I would write "tray" for the native English speaker, which takes away the temptation to say the "s" at the end, which is silent. Then I would also teach in the grammar part of the lesson that the "s" at the end of a word in French is always silent, even if it depicts a plural noun. This phonetic reinforcement of this basic grammatical French language rule helps the memory. The same is true when teaching English to the native French speaker.
I am a retired Pre-school teacher. I also have experience teaching and tutoring Pre-k through 2nd grade in all areas of Language Arts, notably reading, spelling and phonics. I lived many years overseas and taught in American schools in these different countries but have also taught here in the States. I also have experience in one-on-one private in-home tutoring. My methods are based largely on phonics, i.e. the sounds the letters of the alphabet make in English and how they are put together to make words, but I also have experience using the sight word method and spelling techniques. I have been a teacher since 1981 and have kept abreast of the new techniques that have continued to improve these different methods since my retirement in 2009 and which I use for tutoring now.
