Columbus State University - Attending (MEd)
I graduated summa cum laude from the Honor's program at the University of Alabama with a degree in biology. I focused most of studies in ecology and freshwater systems, but I also really enjoy other realms of science. Following graduation, I served as a staff member at a local environmental learning center, which received about 13,000 school age children annually. In this position, I facilitated and assisted with hands-on educational activities for students of all ages. While earning my M.S., I instructed Biology courses at the college level, and, currently, I serve as an adjunct faculty member at Columbus State University, where I teach about sustainability and the environment. While most, but not all, of my past work has been with older students, I have two step sons in elementary school, and I have a great deal of experience with successful techniques to help their learning processes. I am currently working towards my certification in 6-12 science.
I have a great understanding of syntax, grammar rules, and punctuation usage. Additionally, I have developed my own personal techniques for remembering those rules with easy mnemonics and other memorization strategies.
I have years of experience working with elementary-aged children. In addition to my professional career experience, I have personal experience helping my two stepsons, ages 8 and 6, with their learning strategies and content knowledge.
I have a great love of learning, and this mainly comes from my loves of being a student. I believe that learning can be fun and very interactive. One of the most rewarding parts of an educator's work is recognizing that "aha" moment in a student. I am very understanding to a child's needs, and would love the opportunity to work with you and your child. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In addition to my Bachelor's and Master's science degrees, I worked for two years at an environmental learning center. While most of the walk-through traffic was families from the general public, thousands of students on field trips visited the center each year. I had the opportunity to work directly with these students while leading educational activities, hands-on learning tasks, nature walks, and other informative lessons. All lessons were tailored to grade level and Georgia Performance Standards. Additionally, I work in my home with children daily on how to be better students in all subject areas. More than anything, I think my ability to foster a love of education is my most valuable asset. I am working towards my second Master's degree in Teaching, and I have already completed some course work, which includes Foundations of Knowledge: Development and Motivation, as well as Special Education.
I have been a life-long student, and I can even remember developing off-the-wall strategies to remember things, and I can remember this all the way back to when I was in elementary and middle school. I have capitalized on my skill of developing memorization strategies and tricks, and I feel my ability to effectively remember has helped with developing understanding. I have shared several of these tips with the children in my house, and I can already see some of these techniques being of use to them.
