About Rachel

Philosophy

I believe a major barrier to foreign language acquisition is the fear of saying the wrong thing. I try to break down this barrier with laughter. The classroom environment is light and jovial, allowing for a free-flow of communication between students and the instructor and among students.

Biography

Rachel (B.A., Romance Languages, UGA; M.B.A, CSU) has spent the last 10 years developing successful businesses and educational programs such as Baby Belle's Room, the Say Hola to Spanish/Say Bonjour to French programs, Unique and Chic...the traveling boutique, the English Language Institute, and the Immersion Excursion program. Seeing the value in collaborative efforts, she helped forge relationships between CSU and international agents in Korea, Nepal, Vietnam, and Colombia. She continues to travel abroad on a regular basis and has worked as a trilingual interpreter, travel guide, and guest lecturer at international conferences.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

My time in ESL at Columbus State University was really a process that began in 2006 when a group of Colombian colonels came to study there. I had the opportunity to teach 12 of their children a starter ESL course in my home to get them ready to enter the public school system. I was so proud that one of my students, Jose, age 14 at the time, advanced one entire grade level in reading in just eight weeks.

In 2008, I took over as the head of the English Language Institute at Columbus State University where I ran the program for the next three years, tripling the program in size over that time.

Just before I finished that position, Jose, now age 18, had come back from Colombia to study with me at the English Language Institute. He called me to say that he'd gotten his TOEFL scores by email and he scored 102! CSU only requires a 79 minimum for admission to a regular degree-seeking program. Long story short, my work here is done and what a pleasure to have played a part in such great success of my student Jose and others who studied alongside him.

Our French program will be taking its third trip to Paris this November.
