About Rachel

I am currently an adjunct professor of psychology at Georgia Highlands College with degrees from Emory University and Georgia State University. My B.A. is in psychology and sociology, and I hold a Masters of Science in Educational Psychology. I've been a professional educator for over fifteen years, as a Lindamood-Bell instructor and mentor, HS Learning Specialist, Test Prep tutor, and personal Learning Specialist and academic tutor. My academic background is strongest in math and the cognition and learning sciences, and I also have extensive expertise in teaching reading mechanics (phonemic awareness and symbol imagery for fluency). What I love *most* about teaching is the end of that first session, when a student sits back and says, "Wow, that really makes *sense* now!" That confidence and independence for my students is my endgame and ultimate goal. I love providing energetic, personalized, high-quality sessions, especially when my students look forward to the next one! I am based out of Cartersville, and travel to Acworth, Kennesaw, Marietta, and other surrounding neighborhoods for my students.

Expertise and Experience:
* Currently a psychology professor at Georgia Highlands College
* 6 years at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, as clinician, consultant, test administrator, and mentor
* 3 years at Paideia School, as a learning specialist
* 3 years at Appleton Learning, SAT/ACT test prep tutor
* 10 years as a private learning specialist and personal tutor

Subject Tutoring:
* Reading (reading mechanics for word attack, word recognition, and fluency) - K-Adult
* Writing (grammar, concept planning, organization, editing) - K-Adult
* Math (elementary, pre-algebra, algebra, algebra 2)
*SAT/ACT Test Prep

Personal Philosophy:
My teaching style is rooted in the Socratic method, the core tenant being 'respond to the response'. This creates a very energetic and positive dynamic between student and teacher: My questions drive the student's thinking processes and encourage critical thinking and independence. I also emphasize the importance of risk-taking, while empowering the student with positivity and the motivation to do so. Learning should be positive and energetic, and allow students to feel confident, to break out of comfort zones, and to experience the value of mistakes on the road to success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have dedicated several years to personal tutoring in pre-algebra, algebra, and algebra 2. My students have been from both private and public schools and had a variety of educational expectations and goals. I have provided learning support, guidance, and remediation and fine-tuned my skills and methods over time.

Phonics

I worked at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes for five years, and as a part of my experience there, received extensive training in the implementation of the Seeing Stars and LiPS methods: both research-based and well-respected methods with which to develop word attack, word recognition, spelling and fluency skills. This training also included an understanding of phonetic rules as they relate to the Orton-Gillingham method, as well as a speech pathology influence. These methods, my training, and my eventual mentoring required an excellence in fundamentals that were built upon phonics.

Psychology

I have a Master's in Educational Psychology from Georgia State University, and I am an Instructor of Psychology at Georgia Highlands College.

Reading

* Trained in Lindamood-Bell strategies for sensory-cognitive improvement in the areas of phonemic awareness, symbol imagery, and concept imagery for reading mechanics and comprehension.
* Extensive experience in diagnostic evaluations, mentoring, and designing lesson plans for students
* Blend the Orton-Gillingham approach with Lindamood-Bell for optimal results that incorporate both word attack and word recognition skills.

Rachel is a Wonderful & Knowledgeable Tutor who uses non-traditional techniques that actually work!

She's very attentive & detailed to our daughter's needs. Our daughter struggled in reading last year & was on a very low reading scale in school. Rachel has helped her become more confident and identified different skill processes to help her become a better reader. Now our daughter has moved up to 2 levels higher in reading.
