My name is Kathryn and I have over 20+ years experience in education. I have three higher education degrees, as well as, experience in the research field. First, I would like to express my philosophy on teaching. True teachers are born, not made. The student is the most important factor. I strive to give the student the ability to enjoyably absorb and retain the information they are learning. Every person on this earth is unique, therefore, every person understands information differently. I believe in finding the best way for my students to hear (audible), see(visually), touch (tactilely) and speak (verbalize) the information they are learning. In teaching this way, I instill confidence and pride while also ensuring a relaxed and focused student. Learning can and should be fun. I integrate current trends with the appropriate age group activities...sometimes they do not even know they are learning. Ultimately, that "aha" moment when the student realizes they understand (learned) and can express to you the information, this is why I teach!
I have a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Auburn University, a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration, and a Educational Specialist degree with Brain-Based learning in Instructional Leadership. I worked for Tulane University, in New Orleans, for five years on a research study as the data manager and field data collector. The Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health study was a multi-year grant involving 24 public schools and followed a cohort of 3rd grade students through the end of the 5th grade. There were three components of the study; curriculum (classroom), physical (PE classes) and nutritional (lunchroom). Baseline & concluding measures of students i.e. height, weight & cholesterol levels were taken. These measures were implemented periodically throughout the study. I was involved in the collection of all data, as well as, managed all data collected during this study. I returned home to Georgia after the conclusion of the study and began my classroom career in my hometown. I began as a special education teacher, teaching inclusion for 4th and 5th grade students. The school also housed the severe and profound handicapped students for the county. After three years, I moved into the physical educator position, becoming actively involved in many committees and community involvement programs. Children living in the local children's shelter also attended this school. I hope this gives a small picture of the type of teacher I could be for your child.
