I have always helped out other people. Coming from a two-parent educator family, it was not unexpected when all four of us girls graduated from college. I followed in my parents footsteps and became an educator. I was drawn to help those who did not understand easily. This is when I found the field of special education.
I have worked in institutional, recreational, and public school settings, from younger students through high school. Once the highly-qualified requirements came out, I got certified for regular education math and reading. I like to help others understand the subject they need, learning more about the students and what can make him/her understand. I have high expectations for whomever I can help learn. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have successfully completed the Treatment and Education of Autism and Communication Handicapped Children and Adults (TEACCH). I have also attended and used Sensory Integration training. Later on, I was trained for aggression difficulties with Mindset Aggression Training.

Structuring tasks from left-to-right, top-to-bottom is one of the strategies to emphasize when reading or completing math problems. Other assistive technology tools, such as word windows or colored overlays can also assist.
