About Naomi

I obtained my BA in music education and graduated magna cum laude, with honors, and as a part of the honors college at the University of West Georgia. I have a passion for music, arts, and anything that allows people to be unlimited, creative, and self-expressive. This is my approach to learning, teaching, and life.

As a music education major, I have an extensive background in teaching students from the pre-k level to college level in general music, music theory, music history, and aural skills (ear training and sight singing). While in school, I excelled at these subjects and had the honor of tutoring my peers as well. By far, my favorite classes were music history and aural skills.

In addition, my primary instrument is clarinet. I have played for twelve years and have played in many public and private events such as weddings, nursing homes, daycares. I have worked as a staff member for marching bands where I led clarinet rehearsals, sectionals, and full band. While getting my undergraduate degree, I was able to work with many wonderful clarinet teachers who pushed me and taught in very differing ways, but all tremendously making an invaluable impact on the way I play and teach clarinet.

In regards to myself, I'm very open minded, creative, and always thinking of new ways to teach. In my free time, I enjoy going on nature walks, reading, cooking, going to concerts, painting, and drawing. I love helping my students meet their maximum potential and will work hard to help students achieve their goals.

I'm excited about meeting you and helping you love music and art as much as I do!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I've played clarinet for 12 years and studied with several teachers while at university. I have won solo and ensemble competitions, placed in district honor band, performed publicly for school and for work (weddings, nursing homes, daycares, et al.). I have background in classical music and contemporary pieces with composers such as Johannes Brahms, Igor Stravinsky, Gregory Mason, and Claude Debussy.

Ear Training

Along with sight singing, I also excelled in ear training. The university paired the two subjects together, simply because it made sense to. In the class, we would practice solfeg, identify harmonies and intervallic relationships, along with notating simple melodies, and chordal structures. After completing these classes, I tutored other music students in sight singing. The most common issue being able to sing intervals, we practiced this with flashcards and used to piano to help with pitch.

General Music

I've studied music for almost fifteen years now, and graduate cum laude with a BA in music education. I have taught general music for three years, spanning from elementary levels to college levels. I have an extensive background in teaching basic music concepts such as the musical alphabet, reading and identifying notes on the staff, and more advanced concepts such as music history and music theory.

Music History

Studying music, I have a sizeable background in Western music history, spanning from the 1400's to modern classical music. I have listened to, played, and studied numerous genres, artists, and pieces in music history. Excelling in my music history courses, I have had the opportunity to teach concepts of the subject to classmates as well as non-music students.

Sight Singing

As a music major, I studied extensively in aural skills (ear training and sight singing). I excelled in these classes, where I learned how to sing using solfeg syllables, sing and hear intervallic relations, decipher melodies aurally, identify tempi, and chords. After completing these classes, I tutored other music students in sight singing. The most common issue being able to sing intervals, we practiced this with flashcards and used to piano to help with pitch.
