Learning and the learning process have always been interesting to me, and I believe that teaching is an expression and extension that emerges from the joy of learning. I have experience as a 2nd grade tutoring specialist for reading and math, as well as being a substitute teacher for elementary students. I also have experience at the college level as an introductory course mentor as well as Graduate Teaching Assistant. While ages and subject matter may vary, I believe that understanding of the student and his/her relation to the subject matter to be a common ground on which learning may take place.
I have a MA and BA in Psychology and a BA in Philosophy. Through my study of Philosophy and Psychology, I have found that taking on different perspectives is a key to the understanding of the self as well as the other. Learning can be fun and engaging, and move beyond simple regurgitation of facts, as the student is able to integrate material with real world experience and information, as well as apply mnemonics and heuristics to improve recall and long term memory.
The social sciences involve people, and as such are dynamic and lack the rigidity of the hard sciences. It is this dynamic and fluid quality that makes the study of Psychology and Philosophy worthwhile. The individual, the culture, and the environment operate in an integrated system, in which influence and change occurs in all directions, such as a person's being influenced by the surrounding culture or a person impacting that culture. Throughout my career as a student, I have explored Psychology from not only a scientific perspective but also a humanistic/existential, and believe that experience should provide a breadth of interest and possibilities for the student.
I should be available to provide tutoring from 6 PM to 10 PM Monday-Friday, and anytime Saturday and Sunday. My rates are $40/hr.
Feel free to send the course(s), goals, difficulties, objectives, etc. and we can begin the process.
I look forward to meeting with you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience working with elementary students in math, and did well throughout my K-12 times in school.
During my time as an undergrad, I worked with elementary age students with reading and math, and I really enjoy seeing the progress made over the span of a school year. This work was through a government program for schools with needs.
I have also served as a substitute teacher for elementary school.
