About James

The process of tutoring is to engage students in defining their learning needs and priorities, developing a study plan to accomplish these goals and defining how progress and success will be measured.

I have forty years of experience in the business world including the teaching of World and American History at the College level provides the basis to help students learn and retain the information they need to apply in passing a course or a standardized examination.

In the business world I have designed and implemented individual and executive coaching experiences. My approach with all students is respecting them as creative and intelligent individuals while helping them learn and deliver on the demands of higher level education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

American history is the story of our nation from exploration and colonization by European countries to modern times. The American people have persevered over five centuries of hard labor, civil strife, economic development and the taming of vast wilderness to build the United States. My role in the classroom, online or in blended learning settings is to bring this magnificent story to life for students, helping them understand where we came from, where we are going and understand they are an important part of that story.

Bible Studies

Bible study has been a key part of my secular education preparation and presentation and an important part of my weekly worship.

For the past 8 years and again for next year, I have been one of the adult education instructors at my church, an Evangelical Lutheran Church of America(ELCA)denomination. Weekly preparation requires extensive use of the Bible and supporting materials. Typically, this includes video, book review and interactive group discussions.

In my World History classes, discussion of information provided by the Bible is key for students understanding of one of the world's major religions and in gaining the ability to compare Christianity to other major world religions in the development of society and culture.

Career Development

As a business professional with over 35 years' experience in Human Resources and Training, I have participated often in the development, coaching and assessing of employee career goals. This includes both formal and informal processes; e.g., completion of performance appraisals, establishing job skills development curriculum, internships and developmental projects. Correcting deficient performance, motivation, personal goal setting and communications skills have also been an important part of working in this business skill area.
