I am currently working on a second bachelors degree, my first was in child development, this one is special education and credential. I have always wanted to teach children with special needs so I decided to go after that dream, I should have my second degree in a few years.
When my children were younger, I home-schooled them during summer to help strengthen their studies. I also worked in their classrooms while they were in elementary school. I enjoy teaching young children and have worked as a private tutor in both math and language arts.
Working one-on-one with children allows the child to get the attention they need in order to learn a subject that they may be struggling with. I will create a curriculum that will encourage learning in a fun way, using the material that students are studying in school as a guideline. I believe there are many ways that children learn and that learning should be fun.
Some things that have helped my students in the past have been: reading, phonics and math games. Using 3x5 cards with a certain part of speech and the student has to create a sentence with each card, or using cards with prefixes, suffixes and root words, where the student has to match the correct suffix/prefix with its root word. Working with math, I have used real money and life situations to help students understand mathematical problems. I take the cue from the student as to how they need material presented in order to succeed in learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have previously tutored elementary age students in both math and reading skills. I have also aided in elementary k-6th grade classrooms as well as home schooled my youngest from 3rd -6th grades. I have my BA in child development and have worked on my Masters of Education. I have material in my home that can be used to create curriculum as well as for my references if I need.
