About John

With an MA in Comparative literature specialized in translation of classical Chinese texts, I have a broad training in many other related fields of study from cultural anthropology to early Chinese philosophy and religion. The direct benefits of my educational background include professional training in the following areas: Chinese/English and English/Chinese translation of both modern and classical material, advanced textual analysis, proficient academic writing, and college-level instruction.

After nine years of teaching Mandarin and literature for The University of Georgia and Gainesville State college I moved to China for three years to teach writing, SAT/GRE prep, cultural studies, and Chinese language education courses at Nanchang University in Jiangxi. I recently returned from China to continue my education in computer programming with hopes to write my own educational software.

While I am new to Wyzant I have been tutoring English, Mandarin and Chemisty for over fifteen years now. I enjoy helping students understand the principles of succesful learning and watching them meet their academic goals.

For writing I usually teach students a series of lessons that help them learn how to move through the writing process, improve their style, and revise sentences using the paramedic method. I also teach the different types of writing exercises required for standardized tests and in college/high school classes.

For both Chemistry and SAT reading prep my instruction focuses on close reading, a practice that helps students analyze complex word problems. Often, students answer these questions incorrectly because they can't understand what is being asked.

Finally for Chinese, I try to focus on helping students master the principles of language learning success and on giving students an opportunity to use what they already know with conversation and reading/writing drills.

Please feel free to contact me through my Wyzant email account if you have any questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

My MA thesis was translation work from classical Chinese.
I taught Mandarin at UGA for six years and supervised the other Mandarin teachers for one year.
I taught Mandarin at Gainesville State college, now part of UNG, for two years.
I lived in China for the last three years in a city where almost no one spoke English.

English

I taught literature at UGA for six years. I then moved to China to teach English reading and writing at Nanchang University for three years. I've been tutoring English for the last fifteen years.

Literature

My MA is in literature and I can teach material from almost any literary tradition including African oral literature.
My favorite areas are American, classical Greek, and Chinese literature.
I've been teaching literature for almost ten years now: six at UGA and three years at Nanchang University.

Reading

I love teaching critical reading skills. I have over ten years of university-level teaching experience.

SAT Reading

For the past three years I've been teaching reading, writing, and GRE/SAT prep for Nanchang University. Before this I taught literature at UGA for six years. I also tutored English for UGA's Academic Enhancement divison for three years as an undergraduate. Currently, I am tutoring students who are preparing for the SAT or the GRE.

Vocabulary

I have three years of experience teaching vocabulary at Nanchang University, and I scored in the 97th or 98th percentile in English for the GRE.
