About Keri

I have been teaching in some area for most of my adult life. I graduated from Oglethorpe University with a double major in secondary education and English and a 4.0 GPA. I have experience in the public school system and a private school, and I spent 16 years homeschooling my two children. Because of this homeschooling experience, I feel very comfortable teaching in a one-on-one situation. I am aware of the stress this situation places on the student and also of the great opportunity for learning that it gives. I would love to help your student find the gaps in education that are causing the problems they are currently experiencing, and I am willing to use creative methods in order to help them understand the concept. I have taught all subjects up through high school several times and will do whatever it takes to help your child experience success.

I have helped many students with high school math including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. I enjoy helping students improve their grades and increase their confidence.

I have also been teaching English as a Second or Other Language for 19 years and have also taught workshops to help others be better English teachers. I believe in open communication between teacher and student and a relaxed environment. My tutoring sessions consist of vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, grammar, much conversation, and answering of questions. We can also just focus on the area you are struggling with the most.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 to both of my children in our homeschool program and have been tutoring students in Algebra for several years. I enjoy helping students see the process for solving equations and word problems. I loved algebra in high school and look forward to helping others conquer this subject.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated with a degree in Education and English. I have been homeschooling my two children for the last 14 years, teaching all subjects from Kindergarten through high school. I have also taught 5 & 6 year olds at Dacula Classical Academy and have been the preschool coordinator at First Baptist Church of Buford.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified to teach ESL through the SBC. I have been teaching ESL classes for 18 years. I am also certified to lead workshops which teach other people how to teach English and have been teaching this program for 5 years. My college degree in English and Secondary Education also helped train me in this area.

GED

As a homeschooling parent, I have taught my children from kindergarten through high school. I have taught math, science, social studies, and language arts for all grades and am qualified to do so. My daughter is currently a junior in a private college, and my son is a junior in high school.

Geometry

I have taught geometry to each of my children in a homeschool setting. I look forward to helping your student succeed in this area. I believe in encouraging students to work through each step of the problem, writing what they know and drawing pictures to help them see what they know and solve for what they don't.

Grammar

I graduated from college with a double major in secondary education and English, and I have taught English in a public high school setting. I have also taught grammar to both of my children throughout their homeschooling years. I would love to help your student understand the rules of grammar in order to become a better writer!

Handwriting

I taught handwriting to both of my children in our homeschool program. We worked on manuscript, cursive, and D'nealian fonts. I have also dabbled in calligraphy.

Homeschool

I have been a homeschooling mom for the last 20 years of my life. Both of my children were homeschooled throughout their school careers, and they are now both attending college. They graduated from our homeschool and were both accepted at the college of their choice.

Phonics

I taught both of my children to read in our homeschool using a phonics-based program. I have also been tutoring some elementary students in reading, and I have found that, often, there is a lack of phonics knowledge which is causing the problem. I enjoy finding new ways to practice studying phonics sounds and using various manipulative to practice and learn them.

Prealgebra

I enjoy doing prealgebra! I loved algebra in high school, and I continue to enjoy it today. I have homeschooled both of my children throughout their school years, and I have taught these concepts to them and to others. I enjoy teaching students how to solve the puzzle of writing an equation from a word problem and showing them the steps to solve those equations. I know that learning prealgebra is a necessary building block for later math subjects, and I look forward to helping students understand these concepts.

The patience of a saint!

My daughter would never listen to anyone for more than 10 minutes and would totally tune out what they were trying to explain. She was convinced since the 8th grade that she was destined to never understand Math. Now she is in her Senior year and desperate to graduate and I knew I had to do something to boost her confidence and help her succeed....so I searched WyzAnt and found Keri. Thank God!! W
