I am a former high school English teacher with an active teaching certificate, but I mainly have spent the last three years tutoring students to improve ACT and SAT scores. I began my teaching experience as a tutor in 1986. However, after my daughter entered middle school and I decided to begin teaching in the classroom, I chose high school English as my career. I have taught all levels of high school English, including World, American, and British Literature. I have taught advanced students and challenged students with equal, excellent success. I have taught Advanced Placement Literature while also teaching remediation classes for reluctant readers, students who fail the Georgia High School Writing, and students identified as likely to fail End of Course Tests in English subject areas. I use formative assessments and data to determine instructional needs as well as an intuitive sense of what a student needs based on decades of experience. I establish and maintain a wonderful rapport with my students, treating them with respect while simultaneously setting high expectations for each one's own level of achievement. I have collected folders full of notes, cards, and letters from students expressing their enjoyment of my class, their appreciation for my teaching techniques, and their pride in the extraordinary progress they made in the course of a year. The most significant testimony that I have, though, is the uncountable number of seniors who have told me, as they are preparing to leave high school, that I was the best teacher, not just best English teacher, they ever had and then supporting their claims with emails from college that recount their success and ease with college courses as opposed to the struggles of their college classmates. I am happy to provide contact with a number of these students.

In fact, experiencing the excitement of the moment when a child who had been struggling realized for the first time that all words could be sounded out and had meaning (began to read, in other words) has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
