I am a former high school English teacher with an active teaching certificate, but I mainly have spent the last three years tutoring students to improve ACT and SAT scores. I began my teaching experience as a tutor in 1986. However, after my daughter entered middle school and I decided to begin teaching in the classroom, I chose high school English as my career. I have taught all levels of high school English, including World, American, and British Literature. I have taught advanced students and challenged students with equal, excellent success. I have taught Advanced Placement Literature while also teaching remediation classes for reluctant readers, students who fail the Georgia High School Writing, and students identified as likely to fail End of Course Tests in English subject areas. I use formative assessments and data to determine instructional needs as well as an intuitive sense of what a student needs based on decades of experience. I establish and maintain a wonderful rapport with my students, treating them with respect while simultaneously setting high expectations for each one's own level of achievement. I have collected folders full of notes, cards, and letters from students expressing their enjoyment of my class, their appreciation for my teaching techniques, and their pride in the extraordinary progress they made in the course of a year. The most significant testimony that I have, though, is the uncountable number of seniors who have told me, as they are preparing to leave high school, that I was the best teacher, not just best English teacher, they ever had and then supporting their claims with emails from college that recount their success and ease with college courses as opposed to the struggles of their college classmates. I am happy to provide contact with a number of these students.

So excited that his grade is rising. Couldn't ask for a better and involved tutor. Just wish I had found our tutor earlier in the year.
I have a test coming up in one month, and Frances has taught me how to do every single thing that I was having a problem with.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an English teacher, I am comfortable with the intricacies of grammar and am able to explain grammatical concepts in a manner that is easily understood. As an English tutor, I have instructed students for many years with great success. I know exactly what is tested on the ACT and the tricks to beating the test, so I "teach to the test," covering only what is required for raising scores.

I am a grammar guru. I think diagramming sentences is as fun as solving a puzzle. However, as an English teacher, I also have the ability to take a complex, abstract concept (grammar), break it down for understanding, and, more importantly, show students how to use it to construct meaningful writing and speaking.

I have worked with all levels of students in reading, from kindergarten students with special needs to high school seniors trying to pass the graduation test. In fact, experiencing the excitement of the moment when a child who had been struggling realized for the first time that all words could be sounded out and had meaning (began to read, in other words) has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
I base vocabulary instruction on 1) learning roots, prefixes, and suffixes; 2) using context clues; and 3) making connections to prior knowledge, and then utilizing that combination to decipher/decode unfamiliar words, something that happens to everyone every day.
As a certified English teacher, I have many years of experience assisting students, especially struggling writers, with passing the Grade 8 Writing Assessment and the Georgia High School Writing Test. Not only do I understand and "teach the test," I excel in helping students improve their overall writing skills.
