About Debbie

I began my career in 1991 and I recently retired in June 2015. I am an elementary school teacher and have taught grades first through fifth throughout my 24 years in education. I love teaching children and the rewards that it brings to us.
Students who work hard will achieve success. Sometimes everyone hits a wall so to speak, but seeing a different face or a different point of view can make a difference in the end result.
I've had students who were reading on a kindergarten level at the beginning of the year and by the end of the school year, they were reading on a fourth grade level! This doesn't happen overnight, but through a process. I have the experience to help students in all subjects and will encourage each one to do better. I will motivate them to complete their tasks!
A teacher in a classroom tutors students daily through one on one lessons, small group lessons, and whole group lessons. I will look forward to tutoring you and I know when a teacher, a student, and a parent work together, there will be success!

I have taught reading, grammar, vocabulary, and phonics during my tenure as an early childhood teacher in grades first through third. As far as reading, grammar, and vocabulary, I have taught those subjects in all grades through fifth as they are of utmost importance as the student advances through each grade. If phonics is not learned and mastered by third grade research shows that the student will probably not catch up and read on grade level without extra support.

I have an accomplished record of closing the gap on student achievement through hard work and helping students through extra support such as one on one tutoring, small group support, whatever it takes to get them to where they need to be to build confidence and show improvement. Spelling lessons include phonics, sight word recognition, vocabulary, and recall. This is done through practice and repetition.

I love teaching students! Learning can be fun with the correct tools and if you want to improve your scores and are willing to work for it, you will and can do it! I will help you get to where you need to be successful. We will shoot for the stars and hopefully touch the moon! Contact me and lets get started.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified Georgia teacher with 24 years of experience in elementary education. Phonics is essential in early years of school as it helps students in vocabulary, spelling, and reading.

Phonics

I have the experience working with students in this subject area and will help them to understand through practice and repetition. I have taught phonics in first through third grades, and have had to teach some students one on one in upper grades due to their inability to read words and break them apart. I have also taught students in small groups using phonics and I have taught whole group using strategies such as teaching digraphs and blends to help students understand how to apply them. Usually phonics is taught in grades kindergarten through second grades because it is essential in the early years. If a student doesn't grasp this in the foundation of early years of education they can fall behind and not learn to read on grade level. As an experienced teacher of 24 years in education, phonics is a subject I have taught for at least 12 years.
