I've been in the educational arena for five years now. My worldview is a confluence of various perspectives…all equally influenced by the amazing students that I’ve had the opportunity to work with over the years. Whether formally or not – my past four years have been filled with students and their families, their realities, and about the obligation of educators to be accountable to our students in word and deed.
I recently completed my first year as a public school teacher in the heart of The Mississippi Delta – Durant, MS. My student population was 99% African American. I taught full-time and was also a First Year Corps Member with Teach for America. Holmes County is the poorest county in the poorest state and has the infamous distinction of also having the lowest life expectancy in the country. The urgency here was felt everyday as I entered my classroom. Without communication with parents and establishing a presence in the school as one who didn’t mind being active and vocal in the community about local issues – I was able to gain a level of access to the families of my kids that other teachers weren't. The skills of assessing strengths, relationship-building, and ensuring students have access to resources have served me well in the past four years and I think will serve me equally well here.
Although I appreciate the opportunities to work and interact with diverse crowds – I’m particularly indebted and connected to marginalized and historically underserved groups. I believe that service to others trumps any amount of money or prestige; I know that I will be at my best when I am surrounded by others who believe the same.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
