About Michelle

I am a talented and experienced student support professional with a background in enrollment services, student affairs, and counseling. I am a college graduate with a Master of Education in Counseling Education degree from Augusta State University, and I have a keen interest in the development and practice of techniques to enhance personal, academic, and social performance. Due to my natural interest in the field of counseling, I chose to work with adolescents, young adults, and professionals in both the beginning and midst of their education and careers. While completing the graduate program, I found that counselors must be positive role models and have a stake in clients’ success. My training, education, and experience in counseling have provided me with a strong skill-set in assessment, intervention, and advising.

Throughout my counseling career, I always found myself including the psycho-education piece to my sessions; therefore, I started to inquire about teaching. My first teaching experience was at Paine College where I taught EDU 101 – Preparing of Excellence. I currently teach psychology courses online for a technical college. In my spare time, I volunteer with United Elite Basketball, which is a nonprofit youth basketball organization. I am the Marketing Director, and I build/update the website, Facebook page and create flyers, postcards and other marketing material. I plan to incorporate a tutoring and college readiness program within the organization, and I also want to start an online learning platform where the players can watch video clips of training methods and learn more about the game at home. It is a huge project that I hope I can incorporate within the organization. Even though I have a psychology and counseling background, I do not limit myself with what I can do, and neither should you. I continue to learn to use all forms of technology, and I apply it within my career.

This summer I worked as a Online Scorer/Rater for Educational Testing Service (ETS), therefore, I learned about assessment scoring and preparation. I scored the CAASPP exam as well as the California Achievement Test (CAT) for Math and Reading. I also proctored the CAT online using GoTo Meeting.

I am highly knowledgeable of the college recruitment and admissions process as well as the entry requirements for top ranked colleges and universities. I have worked with adult and first generation students from diverse backgrounds and guided students and their families through the rigorous admissions and financial aid processes. I have worked as a College Admissions specialist where I reviewed academic transcripts, essays and reference letters to determine admission requirements. I am aware of the qualifications colleges and universities prefer when accepting applicants.

As a liaison between potential students and the institution I utilize excellent communication skills with a friendly approachable personality. The feedback I continue to receive from clients is very encouraging and pleasing. Building a rapport with an individual or group comes to me quite easily. Moreover, I am able to analyze and diagnose obstacles for growth. I find that the next step is always the simplest: motivating the individual to create a better mental picture of him or herself.

I have a natural ability to understand what schools, parents, and students need and are searching for in reference to education. I am flexible to travel and have a firm understanding of recruiting strategies as well as being innovative in my approach.

I have experience working with a diverse student population whose learning and social functioning levels covered a wide spectrum. I enjoyed and excelled at working with the students to help guide them to set academic and social goals. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to increase students’ tolerance of frustration when they become overwhelmed and feel incapable of succeeding. Helping students realize their potential by focusing on their accomplishments and reflecting on past successes helps promote positive self-concept.

I have a flexible schedule and can accommodate your needs. I do have a four hour cancellation policy in case of emergencies and I offer make up sessions. If you have any questions about my services or qualifications, please feel free to contact me. I hold a very high standard for my sessions as well as ethical values. I encourage feedback from all of the students, families and clients I work with, and I improve my services to meet client satisfaction.

I hope my introduction has given you an overview of who I am as an tutor/counselor and a person. I am excited about getting to know each one of you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

During my employment with Transitional Family Services I assisted diverse students diagnosed with ADD/ADHD in home and school settings. I worked closely with each student and provided individualized support and coping skill techniques to teach the student how to focus in school and at home. For two years, I provided intensive family intervention (IFI) services to children with severe behavioral and emotional needs, ages 4-18 in foster care, DJJ, home, and community settings.
