About Joel

My name is Joel and I want to thank you for taking the time to explore my tutor profile. I wear many hats including being a physician in training, pianist, day-trader, and professional tutor.

To use an appropriate analogy, when you have car trouble, you take your car to a mechanic to fix the problem, NOT the salesman who sold it to you. As a professional tutor, I want to be your trusted mechanic. I am NOT a current/former teacher. Whereas teachers are trained to present "testable" information to large groups in a classroom, my job/passion/training is focused on individually helping students master material that they personally find difficult. Just like any good mechanic, I not only want to fix the problem but address the issues that brought them about in the first place and prevent them from happening again in the future.

More important to you, I am a current medical student. I tackle challenging subjects on a daily basis, but only because I have an in-depth understanding of the building blocks. This "building from basics" concept that has personally served me well is something I incorporate into my tutoring strategy with my clients. My goal is to ensure that my students not only arrive at the correct answers, but know WHY/HOW they got there. In order to do this, I use colorful drawings, helpful mnemonics, and real-world examples to make concepts crystal-clear.

I graduated from one of the nation's top universities with a BS in neurobiology (pre-med) as well as a BA in finance/economics. This diverse academic background in both in the arts and sciences has served as me well in my current pursuit of a dual MD/MBA degree at the Medical College of Georgia. In addition to offering expertise in science, math, and business/economics, I also have years of experience preparing students for success on standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, MCAT, DAT, ASVAB, and GRE.

Deciding that help is needed is often the hardest part of this process. Now that is taken care of, I would be honored to help you/your loved one reach your goals, whether that be catching up on topics that were not understood the first time or learning new material to get ahead. Having professionally tutored for over 10 years, tutoring is truly a passion of mine and I would be honored to help you in any way that I can.

If you would like to discuss how we can work together to meet your personal needs, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Best wishes,
Joel

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

35/36 ACT English, 10 years of professional tutoring experience, studied English Language and Literature at Emory University.

Algebra 1

I have had 9 years of math tutoring with students ranging in age from 4-30+.

Algebra 2

I have had 9 years of professional math tutoring experience through Calculus IV.

Biology

Neurobiology major, current medical student, 99th percentile MCAT biological sciences, 36/36 ACT Science

MCAT

I am a second year medical student at the Medical College of Georgia. I scored a 35 on the MCAT (96th percentile). In addition to having personally taken specific MCAT prep courses, I have experience tutoring others for the exam. My tutoring methods involve using diagnostic tests as indicators of areas to focus on in order to improve scores as much as possible within a limited time period. I also stress the importance of learning strategies for effective test-taking and can offer advice on the entire medical school process.

SAT Math

I received an 800/800 on my SAT Math exam and a 35/36 on my ACT Math exam. I have had 9 years' experience tutoring subjects including prealgebra, algebra I/II/III, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus I/II/III/IV, statistics, biostatistics, econometrics, and math modeling.

TEAS

I am a current medical student so in addition to being in the field, my knowledge of the requisite subjects for this exam (reading, math, English, science, and language) meets/exceeds the level of expertise needed to tutor for this test. I have also tutored several students for this standardized exam in the past and they have all successfully been admitted to nursing school. Finally, the subject matter on the TEAS is very similar (if not actually simpler) than that on ASVAB, GRE, etc. and I certified to teach all of those.
