Northwestern University (English Journalism)
I'm a 2008 graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. I double majored in journalism and English with a minor in history. I've had experience tutoring students my entire educational career. In middle school, I served on after-school study tables. In high school, I tutored students through the school's tutoring program, as well as providing summer prep courses or students retaking state exams.
In college I worked in our Writing Lab, where students could come to get help with essay-based assignments. I also worked with the college's athlete note-taking/tutoring program, in which I was responsible for helping them stay academically eligible, including several who went on to win NCAA championship titles. I also spent four years with the America Reads program, working in elementary and middle school classroom and one-on-one environments. In the America Reads program, I provided help with students' reading, math and history skills, as well as helping them stay focused and develop good study habits.
With these experiences, I've dealt with tutees of all ability levels and I've successfully helped all of them not only maintain or increase their grades, but also to receive more pleasure from learning. I love to learn and I continue to educate myself. That attitude is infectious and guarantees that I enjoy tutoring.
I can work with your needs: If you're more responsive to straight-forward methods, then we'll practice times tables, memorizing facts and work on grammar, etc, but if you need a more creative touch, then I can accommodate that, as well. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
