Georgia State University (Biology)
I am a British Virgin Islander who traveled to America to complete her tertiary education at Georgia State University and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Biology and Spanish with a concentration in International Business.
At the age of 17 years, I began working as a Spanish Teacher at the Sanctuary of Hope Academy for one and a half years helping adults gain their CXC (Caribbean Examination Council) certificate in Spanish. With no teaching experience at the time, I had 6 months to complete a 1 year lesson plan before the regional exam and I had 100% passes.
This is what I love about tutoring/teaching, seeing success in the students' faces especially since I know how frustating it can be trying to understand a difficult concept. Hence why I try to create fun activities, simplify explanations and make use of videos and games. Learning something new is like a big puzzle and my tutoring sessions will be a fun and rewarding way of putting all the pieces together to see the big picture.
While a student at GSU, I was chosen among my peers to become a Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) Leader for Organic Chemistry I & II in which I remained a leader for one year. My duties were to mentor students and engage them in class discussions and problem solving worksheets. I further advanced to the position of a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Organic Chemistry II for my final semester at GSU where I was more independent in creating classroom activities and worksheets.
As for Spanish, I was priveleged to study abroad at the University of Granada for 6 weeks where I stayed with a host family and was completely immersed into the Spanish culture. This experience was quite helpful in improving my vocabulary in the Spanish language especially since I was required to speak Spanish in all of my Spanish courses taken at GSU. The courses necessary to complete my degree in Spanish were mostly to fine tune common grammatical errors in writing, speaking and translating Spanish.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
