I'm Brian! I graduated from Northeastern University with a B.S. in biochemistry six years ago, after which I worked at MIT for 2 years. Currently, I am earning my PhD studying immunology at Emory University.

I've worked with numerous students, ages ~8-27, with varying levels of math and science including trigonometry, geometry, algebra, calculus, biology, and chemistry. During college, I continued to work with high school students in the above subjects, and also mentored other undergraduate students with all levels of biology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. I was also a teaching assistant where I worked on developing research skills for college freshmen and taught entry level biology and chemistry courses. I also volunteered in many high school classrooms teaching how I use chemistry, math, and biology in my day-to-day life.

While I do not have a formal teaching certificate, I have worked extensively with students of all backgrounds and ages effectively over the years. Most report increases in final grade point averages, higher scores on exams (AP exams or state tests) as well as a deeper understanding of the general material. I do my best to convey the work in an interesting manner by showing how the work is applicable to real life. I find that the association with modern day examples provides context and motivation for why the subject matter is important thereby resulting in higher quality work. In addition, I provide many examples from real tests to enforce the principles that I teach (this is particularly important for the state examinations and AP tests).

Each of my lessons is tailored to your child's needs and personal learning style (I will typically have a good feel for how they like to learn and approach problems after the first or second lesson). If the student already has decent grades and is simply looking for a bump I can focus on tips and tricks within the subject matter, as well as promote good study habits and test-taking skills. If your child is struggling I will typically prepare additional material that teaches the subject matter in an alternative light than the teacher has that may be easier to understand than what they have given, and then follow up with test-taking strategies and healthy study habits.

I welcome feedback on how to improve my teaching capabilities to provide a better experience for the student. My prices are negotiable.

For chess lessons: I have been playing chess for 16 years, and have competed across the country. I am rated ~1700 USCF and thus am ideal for mentoring brand new to moderate level players. I have given lessons to players of all ages, and truly enjoy seeing people develop a love for the game. I was president of the Northeastern University Chess Club while I attended and have run tournaments, including the successful NEU open. I will give lessons in person or via the lichess website.

I respond quickly to messages and am able to travel to meet students either in a library or university area or at the student's home. To reiterate, I am happy to adjust my price points to reflect your requirements.

5 stars!

Brian was patient and very helpful. I struggled all semester. After our session I was able to go home and complete practice problems on my own with a true understanding.

The girls were able to show me how all the pieces move on the board as well as check mate with being vigilant in the process. They are going to be practising all week thank you.

Great tutor! Very helpful and knowledgeable!

Brian taught me about en passant, mating the opponent's king with just a queen and a king. He also taught me about king-side and queen-side castling We also reviewed beginning game moves and talked about strategy. He was also kind enough to write down for me resources where I could learn more about chess and practice my game. During my meeting with Brian, I felt like he did all he could to help me improve. For now, what I need to do is just practice and go over my mistakes. Thanks so much, Brian, for your guidance and help.
