I am a college graduate who is interested in teaching history, math, and chess. I have a love for history and international politics. Religious history and social movements are also topics of interests of mine. I tutored students in chess last year and I believe the game helps educationally as well as being fun. The experience of tutoring young children was really inspiring. Education is key to building for the future. I tutored children ages 5-10 at a private school that allowed for a more free flowing environment.
When it comes to tutoring I not only love sharing knowledge with those who need it but engaging in mutual education where we can both learn how different people see things. Tutoring allows for dialogue and conversation. It also allows those who have a difficult time learning in education institutions to peruse alternatives forms of learning. I have a bachelors in history. I also read up on current events and history routinely. My GPA in college was a 3.3 and I was Mr. History in the year of 2010. I was also a member of the history club at my college. I try to read at least 1 book every two weeks that deals with current events or the history that's necessary to understand current events.
I have tutored children ages 6-10 in chess. I have also played chess professionally on and off over several years. The game of chess is a great educational tool because it allows for strategic thinking. In life one has to get through obstacles and there isn't always one solution but a multitude of options. My range of experiences and educational background will allow me to help students struggling in school. I am available everyday and am open to do sessions online or in person. My approach to education is to be culturally relevant in tutoring a student. I believe that being able to communicate with students in a way they can understand is important and cannot be overshadowed. Making subjects relatable to everyday life experiences allows for education to be relevant in the students life.
I have experience tutoring students in African American, religious, and world history in undergrad. My major was History with a concentration in African-American studies. I aided students in writing papers for their history classes. I also helped students prepare for tests in their religious and world history classes while a student. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored students in chess ages 5-10 in 2016. I was on the chess team in high school and played in various tournaments as an adult. I love the game and am very patient with children.
