About Dr. Julie

I realize my hourly rate is more than most; however, I cannot stress enough how tutoring is an investment. I pack so many varied activities into one hour, and my students make tremendous growth in a short amount of time. I TARGET the needs of your child, and I quickly assess and work hard on those specific needs. No worksheets here. Real reading and writing. I love my job! I think I am so good at this because I enjoy it so much. I pour tons of love and energy into each and every child, and they become readers and writers. One of my students is writing her own book about a poison dart frog who is looking for friends. Another student came to me barely able to read _Sheep in a Jeep_ and now he is cruising through _Click, Clack, Moo_!

I am able to show you results because I have mastered my art. I have studied hard for many years to get to this point, and I feel that I'm pretty good at what I do. I love working with kids and helping them grow, and they seem to enjoy their time with me. My students consistently make observable gains in reading comprehension, word identification, grammar knowledge, and writing ability. I discovered a long time ago that all kids LEARN in different ways, so I figured out that I need to TEACH in different ways. Sometimes my younger kids need to stand up and move, while some love to sing. Often my older learners just need meaningful images to support their growing brains as they learn something new. During sessions, any number of things might take place, based on what I see is needed. I ALWAYS differentiate; that means I do not waste time teaching something your child already knows. Elementary or middle level students learn to use strategies in a variety of ways while we enjoy high-quality children's books or young-adult fiction; high school students might work on brainstorming, outlining, or learning how to write a thesis statement. I want so badly for students to experience the joy that comes from reading a text with accuracy, fluency and understanding (as well as writing for a real audience). I want our time to be encouraging. I love to laugh, but I'm also super focused and rigorous, so I always redirect if we get off task. I work with all grade levels, from pre-k through college. Some of my college kids have come back and thanked me because I taught them how to comprehend and summarize. Right now I'm editing text for a doctoral student in a business program, so I’m happy to work with just about anyone who wants to learn.

I can do face-to-face tutoring, but I am also very comfortable using the available technology when parents choose the online option. I taught online courses for my university for about eight years, so I've learned a great deal about getting the most out of a virtual session.

I wish you the best of luck, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I taught college for 12 years.

Reading

I've been a teacher for more than 20 years. I try make reading fun by teaching strategies through movement music and images. This way any child can succeed because they have options for learning. All of the reading is done in texts that I choose based on what your child is interested in, so it definitely doesn't have that worksheet feel at all.

Writing

I edit papers for students pursuing advanced degrees. I am currently editing for two doctoral students. I have an M.Ed. in Writing and English from Florida State University. I've been a college professor for 14 years, and I have taught writing at the college level. For my younger students, I employ multiple methods during tutoring sessions including music movement and imagery. Ultimately, I can help any student improve--pre-k through college.

Excellent doctoral mentor

Dr. Julie has been an excellent doctoral mentor to me since September 2016. Dr. Julie accepted my challenges despite her core competency of English studies. Dr. Julie has been a "God sent" as I journey to become a doctoral candidate and finally a doctor in the discipline of Business Administration. I can call upon Dr. Julie in times of needs, and she is very patient, encouraging, determining and
