Hi. My name is Georgette. I have at least three years of formal tutoring experience. As a high school student, I volunteered as a tutor for East Harlem Tutorial, an afterschool program for public elementary school children in New York City. For the year, I helped a young girl with reading, writing, and mathematics. After working with me, her grades dramatically increased by two levels and she gained confidence in her ability to read at her grade level. In grad school, I was a lead teaching assistant for a students pursuing a Masters in Public Health or Masters in Science program at Johns Hopkins. I have lectured, graded papers and exams, and provided one-on-one sessions to help all assigned students do very well in the course. I have also lead peer tutoring sessions as a Emory student in science topics such as anatomy and physiology. However, my main expertise is in social sciences. I have a Masters in Clinical Social Work from UPenn and a PhD in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
As a long time student, I understand how frustrating it can be to not have enough help or just feel like you "don't get it." I pride myself on really meeting students where they are and helping them see their potential. I really enjoy teaching and working with students to find their way to that "Aha" moment. I am greatly honored and fulfilled to see when how I am approaching teaching really resonates with students. As a teacher, it is important to me that students really understand the material and are not intimidated to learn and engage with the subject. Teaching also helps me to be extremely creative in communicating subjects and finding ways to tailor the lessons for each student.
As I have said, I have tutored elementary school children in math with great results. I have lots of experience working with kids and breaking down complex concepts to where they make sense. I have helped students increase at least one grade and have them take away approaches to problem solving that transfers into more advanced math.
I have formally studied social science for over seven years. I have advanced degrees in social work and behavioral science. I have conducted and published independent social science research focusing on injury prevention. I have worked as a graduate level teaching assistant with classes of at least 60 students. Many of these Master level students worked closely with me to prepare for exams, essays, and any presentations for the course.
I have tutored elementary aged (4th grade) children as a high school student for over a year. I have experience working with children in both outpatient and inpatient settings as a prior social worker.
I have always been very good at learning languages. I started learning how to read using phonics at 3 years old. I have studied French and taken advanced coursework in French being a native English speaker. I have used phonics as a means of learning spoken and written French. Additionally, I have taken a class or two in linguistics as an undergrad.
I am here on this site because I genuinely want to help students succeed. As a student for over ten years, I have a deep appreciation for the importance of good, supportive resources. I also believe that good services shouldn't be available just to those who can afford it. I purposely am going below the average pay rate to increase access of tutoring for young kids and college aged students on a budget. I am open to working with all ages and at all levels. I work diligently with students to help them get the results they want. I invite you to contact me to see how I can help you or your child perform better in school and start enjoying what they are learning. Hi. My name is Georgette. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied social determinants as an undergraduate. I have taken coursework in various social sciences including cultural anthopology and sociology of medicine. My masters degree is in clinical social work. I also have a doctorate in social and behavioral sciences from Bloomberg School of Public Health. I have worked as a lead teaching assistant for two major health communication courses through the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society at Johns Hopkins. All of the students were graduate level students pursuing either a Masters in Public Health or a Masters in Science. I have been responsible for grading papers, grading exams, helping students with major research papers and presentations, and working one-on-one with students to ensure overall success. Students that have worked closely with me and for the full semester have received A's in the course.
