About Mary

My name is Mary and I have 8 years of experience tutoring students of all ages, elementary through college. I have earned a Bachelor's Degree in Middle Level Education (grades 4 through 8) with a concentration in Language Arts and an added concentration in Mathematics. Additionally, I have my Master's in Education: Reading & Language Arts. I do have experience tutoring all core subject areas (math, science, language arts, and social studies), although, as you can see from my education, I specialize in reading, language arts, and mathematics.

Helping students become successful has been a passion of mine since high school. Over the years, I have served as a coach, tutor, teacher, counselor, and mentor to several students of all ages and learning levels. I believe that all students have the ability to succeed when provided the necessary resources and skills. I understand that all students learn in different ways and at different paces and I love the challenge of working with these diverse students to achieve their goals.

After receiving my Bachelor's in Middle Level Education with a concentration in Language Arts, I continued to study to add on a mathematics concentration, grades 4 through 9, to my degree. I am dedicated to finding ways to connect mathematics to an individual's interests while providing him or her with different approaches to the problem.

With both an undergraduate and graduate degree that have concentrations in both English and education, I can say that English is the subject area in which I am the most competent. I have a wide range of experiences tutoring all areas of reading and writing. I am passionate about helping students that struggle in English develop the skills necessary to become an efficient reader and writer.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have experience with testing students for reading levels and abilities, increasing confidence while reading, and assisting students in reading comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency.

Study Skills

As an academic coordinator for the Georgia Institute of Technology, I work with student-athletes to maintain academic success. I assist my students specifically in time management, advising, and study skills to ensure their success in the classroom. After all, these students must be eligible according to NCAA rules and regulations to be able to play their respective sports. Therefore, these students must use effective study skills to keep up with academics and use their time wisely. A few strategies that I use are effective note taking skills, organizers and visuals, and planners.

Track & Field

I participated in Track & Field for 6 years from middle school through high school. Additionally, I have 3 years of coaching experience with a middle school track team. I am still an active runner and recently completed my first marathon. I have also attended running workshops that focus on proper nutrition and form.

Patient, Kind, and Knowledgable!

Mary met with my son for the first time and instantly created a bond! I was impressed by her ability to make reading fun! Nothing but great things to say.
