About Luke

Just barely graduating high school never giving a thought to furthering my education, I entered the workforce at the age of eighteen. I went from job to job, first working at the local garbage dump before settling into a restaurant cooking position for a few years. After several dead-end jobs, I decided to return to college. Having been out of school for six years and having not taken it seriously while there, I turned to the Virginia Community College System as a stepping-stone to reach my goal of obtaining a bachelor's degree in history. From there I transferred to the University of Virginia where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in history.
While attending UVA, I began to entertain the idea of obtaining a doctoral degree in history to help students understand history and how we live with it every day of our lives. As a Master’s student at Old Dominion University, I gained invaluable experience working as a teaching assistant. While there I helped teach Latin American and European history. After graduating with my master’s degree in history I taught both American and World history for two years at three different colleges. I taught at Old Dominion University, as well as a small private liberal arts college, and at a local community college. Since moving to Atlanta and starting my PhD in history, I have continued to help teach as an assistant in both American and World history courses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
