I am a native English speaker and have taught students of all ages, from preschoolers to elderly students. I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations with a concentration in Japanese Studies from DePaul University in Chicago.
During my final year of college I lived in Chiba, Japan where I worked part-time at Tomioka Hachiman Shinto Shrine while attending Kanda University of International Studies. After I completed my undergraduate studies, I spent one year living in Tokyo, Japan attending Kai Japanese Language School in Shin-Okubo, where I advanced my language skills and studied translation theory with a private tutor.
My fascination with Japan goes beyond language-learning. I have spent significant time studying Japanese Film and Japanese Religion. I have a deep interest in Japanese architecture, cuisine, and music as well. I tend to incorporate these and other elements of Japanese culture into my students' lessons.
I first began teaching elementary-level students while I lived in Japan. Since moving back to the states, I have worked with over a dozen students. I have also translated nearly 10,000 words as a freelance translator and have worked part-time at a Japanese ramen shop. In the Fall of 2018, I intend to enter a Master's program in Japanese Linguistics and Pedagogy after which I hope to teach Japanese at the University level.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been studying Japanese since undergrad and recently returned from a year studying at a language school in Tokyo. I assisted fellow students and have tutored since I have returned. I am vigorously pursuing a career in Japanese education at the University level. I really enjoy working with Japanese learners of all ages and witnessing them solving the problems raised in learning such a new and challenging language.
