Georgia State University (Physics)
I've tutored both individually and with nationally recognized tutoring companies specializing in test prep (ACT / SAT / AP / IB) and other academic subjects for close to six years. I love teaching and believe that the most learning occurs in low student to teacher/tutor ratios; although I want to eventually pursue a masters in education, I want to remain a tutor rather than become a classroom teacher for that reason alone.
As a tutor, I love discussing how or where or why a concept exists; I believe in homework as a tool for practicing and re-learning skills; and I try to encourage independent study skills (of which organizational skills plays an important role). I also try to teach in a way that's best suited to my students, rather than adhering to a strict method of teaching, since not all students learn in the same ways.
I studied math and physics in college, and I have been tutoring for going on six years in K-12 mathematics. At the moment, I'm working almost full time as a tutor. My availability is strictly evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. I prefer 2-hour sessions with students. My favorite subjects to work with are physics, calculus, pre-calculus / trigonometry, and algebra. I've been trained in and regularly tutor students in all SAT / ACT topics, but for test prep, my preferred topic would be math.
I would be open to holding sessions with 2-to-1 or 3-to-1 ratios at reduced prices (per student). My preferred location is at a public library, but I'm also open to holding sessions at a student's home or at a coffee shop. I look forward to hearing from you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
