Villanova University (English Literature)
As a first-generation college graduate, I have seen firsthand the power of a quality education and dedicated teachers. Powerful educators shaped my future and I knew at a young age that I would want to do the same. Upon graduating with a degree in English Literature from Villanova University, I became a full time tutor with the AmeriCorps program City Year. This organization put me in a third grade classroom for two years, where I worked throughout the day with some of the lowest performing scholars. Many scholars in my caseload were English language learners and struggled with fluency. After working with them on strategic interventions, including repeated readings and sight phrases, they were able to read fluently on grade level. Scholars stayed motivated and their confidence grew as they tracked their own progress throughout the year. During these two years, I also ran a successful after school program that focused on providing homework help and enrichment opportunities for scholars in 3-5 grade.
After completing two years in Los Angeles, I was accepted into a rigorous teaching certification program in Atlanta under The New Teacher Project. I served my first two years as a 5th grade ELA teacher in East Point and currently serve as a 6th grade ELA teacher with KIPP South Fulton Academy. My three years of classroom teaching equipped me with even more strategies for helping scholars with basic fluency and comprehension difficulties. I work successfully with a diverse group of learners, including special needs scholars, English language learners, and advanced learners. After my first year teaching, I received an award for my scholars' achievements on the Reading portion of the state standardized test. I am always striving to learn how to better serve my scholars. Regular professional development sessions are constantly helping me perfect my craft.
As your tutor, I will first diagnose what your strengths and areas of growth are. Then I will come up with an individualized plan that relies on your strengths to target your areas of need. We will monitor your progress in order to ensure that our interventions are successful. I genuinely believe that all scholars can be successful with the right support. I hope that I will be able to help you see success in ELA!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
