About Erin

I have an undergraduate degree in middle grades teaching and a master's in early grades education. I have fourteen years of teaching experience in the public schools and private schools in Atlanta. I have a love for helping students with math (especially focusing on the Everyday Mathematics program and the Singapore learning program). I also have a great deal of experience in reading comprehension (using literature and reading groups), writing (Lucy Caulkins program), and helping students with spelling. I believe in helping my students with identifying their learning style and using a variety of hands on activities to learn the material.

I feel it is essential that I have clear communication with the parents about how we are progressing in the tutoring sessions and what the child can do at home to further their learning. I do love to make tutoring and education fun by connecting their schoolwork to their extracurricular activities and their amazing personality!

I have been trained in Everyday Mathematics for several years. I also have some experience in teaching Singapore Math. I believe in the process and the steps of math. Not just the answer. It is pertinent that students know several ways to solve the problem and then they can choose what is the easiest for them. I also believe in helping with estimation and any real world situations that pertains to money. I enjoy working with children on word problems and simplifying them so they too can solve them easily and in a timely manner.

I have a vast background knowledge in children's literature from grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. I have created and directed reading groups in my second grade classroom for a variety of reading levels. I do enjoy focusing on reading comprehension, connecting past schema with present material in the book, characters, cause and effect, summaries, and making opinions about the books while utilizing examples to prove the children's ideas. I have taught a variety of grammar through reading and writing and educational programs.

I have tutored a variety of elementary level children with a variety of needs. I have a masters in elementary education and fourteen years of teaching experience in a variety of settings. I believe in integrating the child's interests into the curriculum they are trying to learn or perfect. I also believe in using reading and writing as a basis for a variety of subjects. For example, if the individual child enjoys art we would incorporate drawing, painting, clay, etc. into the lessons. If the child enjoys soccer we could create math word problems that involve soccer. We could also work on spelling rules while moving a ball around the room. I also have a background in the Lucy Caulkins waiting program in which you are writing and publishing your own works just like a real author. I believe children always have to feel that you are supporting their interests, keeping the academic material fun, fresh, and to the point! Since I have worked in the public and private school systems I am very familiar with most of the up to date educational programs offered in the schools. I also believe communication is very important with not only the parents, but the child's teachers also. I am willing to keep in close communication with both by email or cell phone.

Please call me or email anytime! I am a very friendly, energetic tutor who also loves sports and being outdoors! I can support any student from pre-kindergarten through Fifth grade. I have a large array of experience in education and would like to help any child who needs support. I have two children myself and I know that tutors sometimes are essential to making the family's academic year a much smoother one.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
