About Kimberly

As a former International Teacher, a current Admissions Advisor, and a tutor for over a decade, I have had the pleasure of working with many different students, each with their own unique style of learning and communicating. My specialties are: College Prep/Advising, SAT, TOEFL, Math (levels up to and including Pre-Calculus), ESL, Reading, English, Language Arts, and all Elementary subjects (including but not limited to: Science, History, and Social Studies). Because I have a special relationship with students who are on the spectrum, several of the students I tutor have had Asperger's, Autism, or ADD/ADHD. In addition, I was the primary caretaker for an autistic child for a year.

On average, my students have increased their SAT Math scores by 120 points.

I lived and worked in China for about four years, so I also have general knowledge related to the language in speaking and pinyin.

My work with behavioral and special needs students began at a young age, and I have continuously kept track of progress in research and understanding of students with special needs. In addition, I feel my experiences working with special needs students has taught me how to understand and appropriately foster to my students' needs.

Contact me with any questions about my skill levels, availability, and to schedule a lesson (or two).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a teacher, I had 2 students who were diagnosed with ADD/ADHD that I taught for the academic school year. In addition, I have tutored 3 children with ADD/ADHD over the past few years. All improved grades. I also studied and have undergone counseling for ADD/ADHD.

Aspergers

I have successfully tutored and nannied for children with Asperger's. In addition, my first grade classroom had a student with Asperger's in it that I worked very closely with. In addition, I studied Child Development Psych and Soc, both of which involved coursework and learning about this need.

Autism

Within my career, I was a caregiver for an autistic child, and I provided counseling for her cognitive and reasoning skills. In addition, we worked on homework assignments and basic learning puzzles/projects to help her improve her skill sets. I also successfully tutored a child with Autism for two academic school years, and I used to live with my cousin who has autism.

College Counseling

I have been a College Counselor for the past 3 years. 92% of my students were accepted into Top 30 Schools, and 100% were accepted into Top 50 schools. I help students personalize their school lists based on their personalities, subject interests, and other factors. We tailor a plan that will involve brainstorming ideas for their Personal Statement and other essays, help them understand what courses they need to take in order to achieve certain goals, prepare for SAT/ACT tests, etc.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified International Primary School Teacher. I also hold my certification in Multiple Intelligence learning, which involved me taking courses and understanding how to gear my lessons to different students' highlighted intelligences. I also successfully tutored students K-5 in the US, SA, and China.

Handwriting

While I was a teacher, my school incorporated "Handwriting" as a portion of our curriculum b/c we were in an International School in China. Therefore, I had to learn appropriate techniques (with the help of school provided coursebooks) to help my students learn how to write neatly. In addition, I have tutored students in reading, writing, and ELA, which in some cases, led to me assisting them with handwriting because several of my younger students (K-2) really needed help with it, esp those with motor dysfunctions/delays. As a former International Teacher, a current College Counselor, and a tutor for the past decade, I have had the pleasure of working with many different students, each with their own unique style of learning

Microsoft Windows

I recently took the Georgia State Microsoft Office test. I scored a 98% in Word, 97% in Excel, and 95% in Access. I also learned to navigate Windows from the beginning of Windows 93.

Phonics

While in China for four years, I spent several of those years tutoring students in phonics. I worked in large groups and in one-on-one tutoring sessions. The students I worked with one-on-one continued to work with me until I returned to America because of our success. My focus was to improve sight and sound recognition, which enabled my student's spelling, speaking, and reading abilities to improve. In addition, I have done extensive research to find what phonics books work best for all levels of students; therefore, I am able to recommend appropriate study materials. (All Elementary aged students).

SAT Math

I took the Princeton Review course for SAT teaching and learning. In addition, I have tutored many students for the SAT with specific studies in the Writing, Reading, and Math sections as the students needed. In addition, my student's Math scores improved, on average by 40 points after working together for 3 months.

SAT Writing

I have tutored many students for the SAT. The highest score increases were in the Writing Section, followed by the Math, and ending with the Reading Section. On average, my students' scores increased by 80 points within 3 months.

Social Studies

Besides holding a major in Sociology from Wake Forest University, I also minored in Psychology and Women's & Gender Studies. These subjects, in congruence with my former History and Social Studies tutoring, have allowed me to learn how to teach and incorporate appropriate lessons to help students prepare for Social Studies lessons, tests, and assignments at home and school.

Sociology

I majored in Sociology at Wake Forest University. I graduated on the Dean's List and worked with a professor on editing the 2nd Ed of his book. I wrote numerous research papers and truly fell in love with Sociology to the point where I keep up to date with the most recent research and discoveries and try to incorporate my knowledge in everyday life.

Track & Field

I ran track and cross country for seven years. I also participated in training camps and practices where I learned specific running techniques which helped me improve my times. I made State many times and received scholarships for several schools.

Violin

I have played the violin for 17 years and have done music lessons with several students in the past. I primarily worked with younger and beginner level students and helped them with their sight-reading, bow leverage, and tuning abilities.
