About Staci

Hello Students!
I have been an elementary school teacher for 12 years and have taught 1st-4th grades, as well ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages). I have tutored a variety of ages, including middle grades (6-8). My philosophies about teaching focus on finding students' strengths and giving them the tools they need to succeed.

I love tutoring because working one on one with a student helps him feel a sense of pride and success. From there, I guide them in the right direction and watch them grow! I never give up and try to pass this gift of perseverance onto every student, regardless of age.

I graduated from Michigan State University with a major in Elementary Education and minors in Spanish and English. I received a Master's in Curriculum and instruction and an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership. I currently teach Special Education at a school with a 96% Hispanic/Latino population. I often use my fluency in Spanish to interact with non-English students and their parents. I have also taught a Spanish For Educators class for the faculty at my previous school.

Working in a school with such a high ESOL population, vocabulary has been my main focus in nearly every subject. I use a variety of techniques to teach new vocabulary so that it makes sense and sticks with my students.

I have much training and experience in teaching the Common Core Standards. I also spend time reading the standards and analyzing them in order to prepare for lessons. My experience teaching a variety of grade levels has familiarized me with the sequencing of the standards throughout the elementary school years.

I have taught students with a variety of needs over the past twelve years. In teaching ESOL, gifted, and Special Education students, I have learned the best practices for all students. My approach is very hands-on, visual, and kinesthetic. Students learn most by doing!

I would love to meet with you and find out about your particular goals for tutoring. I'd love to hear more about you, and to find the right schedule and program for us to work together. Please contact me with any questions.
I look forward to speaking with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have 11 years of teaching experience in Georgia. I was teaching during the transition between the Georgia Performance Standards and the Common Core State Standards. I received much training from my district and school. I also utilize the standards every day to know what to teach and what my students need to master.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have spent the last 11 years teaching grades 1st through 4th grades. I am very familiar with the standards and expectations of elementary aged students. I serve as a mentor for new teachers and was voted Teacher of the Year for 2015 by my peers.

Elementary Math

I am Certified in Elementary Math PreK-5th grade as well as Middle Grades Math 6th-8th grades.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ELL/ESOL students for the past 11 years. I have served as a classroom teacher with large populations of ESOL students, as well as spent a year as a full-time ESOL specialist. I also worked a Saturday program tutoring 7th grade math to students with Limited English Proficiency.

Public Speaking

I have attended several public speaking trainings. One was organized by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Georgia and Alabama in preparation to be one of their fundraising speakers and a Leadership Conference in which the focus was on public speaking. I have taught students the importance of pronunciation, eye contact, tonal inflection, and ways to improve confidence.

Spanish

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with minors in Spanish and English. I have taught ESOL to Spanish-speaking students for over 12 years. I have also taught a Spanish for Educators class to colleagues.

Study Skills

I have previously tutored elementary school students in techniques to use when studying vocabulary, math, and reading for comprehension/retention. With my classroom students, we spend much time on how to practice and how to make things "stick". Some examples include mini vocab books, kinesthetic memories, flash cards, highlighting important information, and more.
