About Andrea

Hello :)
An opportunity to tutor and teach is an opportunity to learn in reverse for me. I am a Purdue graduate student headed to medical school. I have volunteer experience tutoring students of all ages and in difference subjects, but I most enjoy tutoring the sciences. I am very passionate about helping others in any way that I can, may that be academically or in life. I am a recently retired professional athlete as well, and take pride in being able to appeal to many different types of people. I am a lover of people, and most specifically a lover of kids.

What I am excited most about this opportunity to tutor, is that I will be directly involved with assisting others in achieving their academic or athletic goals. With me, you are getting an all around experience that transcends just putting pen to paper. I'd like to be a dependable, "utility" type of weapon within your academic arsenal. I look forward to going above and beyond.

I majored in Biology and it is my passion. I was an A student in the sciences, most specifically upper level biological courses, and plan to take my love of science and people with me as I pursue medicine.

As a member of the deaf and hard of hearing community, I understand the special needs of those who share my place in the community and will go above and beyond to make sure my students are comfortable. ADD/ADHD students are also a joy to work with, because I believe in making learning fun to capture attention in a productive way.

I am also very interested in giving back to the athletic community as well. I am a collegiate and professional women's basketball Player, having played in both the WNBA and European leagues for two years. I am a Big Ten conference most outstanding player, and recipient of numerous awards related to basketball and my commitment to the community. I am the founder of a non-profit organization. Giving back to kids is a passion of mine, especially when I can bond with them through sport.

Shoot me and email if you need some extra help! Going the extra mile to understand and master skills you aren't comfortable with is the first step towards success! I would love to be apart of your journey!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Conquering the Math section of the ACT is about confidence and mastery of the subsections covered within the exam. As an A math student, I prefer a well-rounded approach in preparing for all of the subsets of math tested for on the ACT, in hopes of building confidence to master any problem my students may encounter.

Algebra 1

Mastering Algebra is followed by the ability to think objectively about its topics and make sense of symbols that are sometimes intimidatingly obscure. As an 'A' student in algebra on both high school and collegiate levels, I feel as if I have acquired skills in being able to objectify algebraic topics, as well as assist others in acquiring those skills. Through a "practice makes perfect" approach, I hope to build confidence in my students that leads to mastery of algebra on all levels.

Anatomy

Anatomy and physiology were an integral component in receiving my undergraduate degree. I am in the process of applying to medical school, and a big part of why I am pursuing medicine is my love for the body and its intricacies.

Basketball

I am a collegiate and professional women's basketball player. I am a two time Big Ten Conference champion. I played in both the WNBA and European leagues for several years. I enjoy giving basketball lessons and make getting better at basketball fun!

Biology

I majored in Biology in college and thoroughly enjoy the subject. I have a great way of simplifying the most complex biological subjects so that they are easy to digest and understand. My method of taking seemingly complex biology subjects and placing them into real life applications has proven effective for me while teaching.

Chemistry

I was required to take advanced chemistry classes in college to receive my undergraduate degree. I enjoy teaching chemistry by making the subject fun and giving real life meaning to seemingly tough chemistry concepts.

ESL/ESOL

I mastered English at all education levels. I am a fluent English speaker, grammar fanatic, and proofreader!

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry allows for science to take on new meaning in how it pertains to life and the functionality of the body. As a pre-medical student, I had the opportunity to master organic chemistry by taking upper level chemistry courses. Mastering organic chemistry is about being able to explore real life application of organic chemistry topics. My success in working with organic chemistry students extends from my ability to make the subject fun and life applicable.

Physics

As a pre-med student, I was required to master basic and complex physics topics alike. I enjoy providing real life applications to physics concepts so that tougher topics can be mastered through continued practice.

Physiology

Physiological studies were an integral component in receiving my undergraduate degree. I enjoy the real life application of physiology concepts as it concerns biology and anatomy alike. I enjoy helping other build confidence while mastering physiological concepts.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is best mastered when topics are kept simple. Through my experiences with enrichment exercises, I believe that I can help make Prealgebra simple and easily digested.

Proofreading

As an honors English undergraduate student, I've always taken pride in my acute attention to detail when correcting grammatical errors and proofreading. It always helps to have an extra set of eyes after pounding through a paper in hopes of making it perfect. With proofreading experience on an honors level, I feel particularly qualified to proofread.

Psychology

In addition to enjoying the subject in college, I performed exceptionally well in psychology courses. I believe that the key to my success in psychology was simplifying concepts to their application in real life.

Reading

In addition to being an A student in English and literature classes, I have also studied reading comprehension strategies for standardized tests such as the MCAT and GRE. The methods in which I used to study prepared me incredibly well for success on both tests. I plan to share those proven success methods with those that I tutor as well.

SAT Math

After performing brilliantly on the math portion of the SAT, I feel as though I am equipped with math and test-taking skills alike to provide my students with in-depth practice to build confidence towards dominating the SAT Math section.

Spanish

I have taken over 15 years worth of Spanish lessons. I also minored in Spanish in college and I'm a fluent Spanish speaker. I have taken college courses in Spanish grammar, poetry and literature.
