About Nicolette

I have been working as a tutor since 2007 for elementary, high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. I help students learn the information they need to do well in class and the study skills they need to improve their academic performance. I can help students complete assignments, develop a study schedule, improve study skills, increase reading comprehension, expand critical thinking, and improve writing quality. I have worked with English-language learners and students with mild to moderate learning disabilities.

I am a proponent of asset-based tutoring and expandable theories of intelligence. In short, I believe that each student has strengths he or she can use to improve their academic performance and the role of a tutor is to help a student identify and apply those strengths to schoolwork. The more students learn to develop skills instead of correct deficits, the better able they are to produce quality work that brings them pride and the better their academic performance will be.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

European History

I completed my Bachelor of Arts in German and Religion and concentrated my work in European history. The majority of my research is in Late Medieval and Early Modern European history.

Public Speaking

I spent five years competing in local, state, national, and international forensics. I was a member of the National Forensics League from 2005 until 2009, received a merit-based scholarship from Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) for my public speaking achievements, and the Theater and Communications Department of PLU awarded me the Phi Kappa Delta award (an annual, national award given to the top forensics student at each participating university). I qualified for Nationals in both public speaking and debate and was selected to represent PLU in the World Universities Debating Championship in 2009.

Reading

Teaching reading proficiency and comprehension was included in my training as a tutor through the College Reading and Learning Association.

Spelling

I worked with students in reading and writing proficiency, which necessarily includes spelling.

Study Skills

I have developed excellent study skills through my own experience, tutoring, and necessary test taking. I scored 1460 on the SAT in 2005; on the GRE I scored 700 on the verbal reasoning section and 670 on the analytical writing section. I have taught exam and course study skills as a peer tutor and teaching assistant since 2007. My students have, on the whole, done well in their courses and on exams and I have received strong evaluations from students.

Writing

I am a skilled writer and have successfully taught academic writing to students and peers since 2007. I have worked as a graduate teaching assistant at Emory and an academic tutor at Pacific Lutheran University helping students with general writing skills, specific written assignments, and preparation for essay exams.
