I look forward to helping you (or your student) achieve your educational goals, and discover new personal strengths in the process. I am completing a joint PhD in Anthropology and History. I have formally taught for 2.5 years at University of Michigan and Spelman College, but I have several more years of tutoring, mentoring, and college advising experience as well. I have also supervised other tutors, developed success strategies, consulted on curriculum development, and conducted major research on academic advising. I enjoy broadening students' educational horizons and perceptions through using film/TV clips, role-play, show-and-tell, and relevant cultural metaphors to illustrate or elaborate key concepts and stimulate discussion.
I am particularly interested in helping students navigate the college admissions and pre-medical/pre-dental admissions processes, and enjoy working with multicultural, multilingual, and international families to address their particular concerns. I am proficient in French and Twi, and lived in West Africa for 15 months. I can assist with improving writing and reading techniques for class assignments and standardized tests, as well as training clients how to use various computer applications, conduct library research, and design equitable group projects. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I provide customized, comprehensive college admissions and scholarship application support for individual clients and college preparation workshops for nonprofit organizations.
I am a PhD candidate at the University of Michigan, where I also earned a master's degree. I attended Stanford University and Spelman College during my undergraduate education. I have also taught writing-intensive classes at Spelman College and the University of Michigan.
Since 2006, I have helped several students gain admission to selective colleges and universities ( including an Ivy League business school) and to improve their test scores. The difference lies is my approach to working with students to keep them organized and motivated, and in helping them to recognize their strengths.
As a high senior senior, I applied to 20 colleges and universities, was awarded several thousand dollars in merit scholarships ( including many full- or half-tuition awards), and gained admission to 4 of the 8 Ivy League institutions (University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, Yale, Brown; Harvard -waitlisted, Princeton - rejected). Because of my high performance on the SAT, I was also designated as a National Achievement Finalist.
I look forward to working with your student to achieve his or her goals.
