About Kathleen

I have been tutoring children for over 15 years. I began tutoring elementary aged children when I was a high school student. From there, I worked as a part time nanny for several families, providing babysitting and tutoring services.

After I graduated from college, I oversaw an after school program for K - 2nd graders. In this program, I provided homework help as well as tutoring services to over 20 children, with the focus on improving literacy across all subject levels. I feel that literacy is the first step to achieving educational success, and reading is an essential component to every area of study and life.

I then decided to make a change and move from Ohio to Georgia, where I became a teacher. I taught for seven years at a residential hospital for children with severe emotional and behavioral problems. My goal as a teacher was to reach every student as much as possible; in order to do this I provided multiple learning formats as all students learn differently. I taught all subjects to K -12 students, in both general and special education classes, with my areas of expertise in mathematics, writing and reading. I served as both the Middle School and Mathematics Department Chair during my tenure.

My love for continued learning led me to earn my Master’s degree in special education, as well as a K-12 reading endorsement during my time as a teacher. As a graduate research assistant at Georgia State University, I saw the gap between research and practice; often teachers and families were not given the resources and current practices to best support student education. I grew to love research and decided that in order to best support student, teacher and family needs, pursuing my Ph.D. in special education was necessary. As a current doctoral student, I provide behavioral and educational professional development in current evidence-based practices to educators and families. I also teach college level courses to undergraduate and master level students interested in pursuing a teaching career. Although I miss my time with students as a classroom teacher, I see that my experiences are allowing me to make a larger impact in the field of education.

In addition to teaching and research in Georgia, I have provided part-time in home and online tutoring services to K –12 students, with and without disabilities. Helping all children learn is my lifelong passion. I hope that you will allow me to improve the education of your child while always remembering to have fun!

Are you are student that is in need of math, reading or writing support? If yes, I would love to provide you tutoring assistance and help guide you to overcome any obstacles that may come your way! Please feel free to email me with questions or concerns. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught students with and without disabilities for almost ten years, many of which have been identified as having ADD or ADHD. My teaching includes the use of self-regulation and executive functioning skills which aid students with attention challenges in monitoring their own learning and internalizing strategies to be successful. I have provided training and professional development to several schools on the use of self-regulation skills.

Algebra 1

I have experience in teaching mathematics, aligned with common core standards, to students in both middle and high school. I also served as the mathematics chair at my previous school.

Common Core

I have taught Common Core standards for over seven years in the areas of mathematics, science, writing and reading. I believe in teaching purposeful and hands on strategies to students, based on their individualized needs. My expertise allows me to take the standards students are expected to master and teach them in a way that is both helpful and meaningful.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an educator for over ten years, I have taught mathematics, reading and writing to elementary, middle and high school students. I also hold a renewable teaching certification in mathematics, language arts, reading, social studies and science in grades K-8 in addition to a K -12 reading certification. I have been trained by experienced educators and researchers in evidence-based academic and behavioral interventions. Lastly, I served as the mathematics and middle school department chair during my time as a teacher in a K - 12 school.

Special Needs

I have renewable special education teaching certification in the areas of: mathematics, language arts, reading, social studies and science as well as a reading certificate. My master's degree in special education has provided tools and strategies that allow me to best meet the individualized needs of students. I believe that students with special needs are exceptional, and therefore require exceptional educators that highlight student strengths, effort, and success with a positive approach.

Study Skills

I have tutored both in and outside of the classroom in the area of study skills. Using strategies that help to build on executive functioning areas such as planning and organizing, my students have seen a increase in academic achievement. I have also assisted as a college level instructor, guiding future teachers in study skill strategies which will support their students.
