Bio

As a young boy, I had a learning disability. I was a slow learner and required extended time on my tests. Since I learned differently from other students, I needed extra help. This "help" came in the form of several outstanding tutors. Whether it was proofreading a paper or cramming for an algebra test, my academic success is because of their efforts. They are the reason I went into education.

I have been tutoring since 2010, and began professionally tutoring in 2011. Most of my experience is tutoring international students (my Master's is in Applied Linguistics, which is a fancy way of saying "teaching English as a second language"). In my opinion, these are students who face language barriers not dissimilar to what I faced growing up. In a way, I know precisely what they are going through: lacking the proper vocabulary, unsure if a sentence is phrased correctly, or even if the tone is appropriate. I see myself in these students because I asked the same questions they do: "What is a thesis statement? How do I write one, let alone a good one?"

I know there are students who are just like me. They are smart but just need a little more attention. Together, the first step is to create goals. Next, we will develop strategies to help us reach those goals. Then the student will do the necessary task with supervision from the tutor (me!). Lastly, a review of the material learned will commence so that the information fossilizes.

Let's get started!

Public Speaking

I have a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics with a focus on teaching English as a second language. I worked for four years at the University of South Florida as an English tutor for international students. Many student would come to me for speaking practice, and this included how to speak publicly for school presentations. Together, the student(s) and me would review scripts, PowerPoint presentation, and rehearse the speeches. We would discuss important public speaking elements: eye contact, speech rhythm, intonation, body posture, and the cliche formula of "say what you're going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them".
