Personal History:

As a young boy, I had a learning disability. I was a slow learner and required extended time on my tests. Since I learned differently from other students, I needed extra help. This "help" came in the form of several outstanding tutors. Whether it was proofreading a paper or cramming for an algebra test, my academic success is because of their efforts. They are the reason I went into education.

I have been tutoring since 2010, and began professionally tutoring in 2011. Most of my experience is tutoring international students (my Master's is in Applied Linguistics, which is a fancy way of saying "teaching English as a second language"). In my opinion, these are students who face language barriers not dissimilar to what I faced growing up. In a way, I know precisely what they are going through: lacking the proper vocabulary, unsure if a sentence is phrased correctly, or even if the tone is appropriate. I see myself in these students because I asked the same questions they do: "What is a thesis statement? How do I write one, let alone a good one?"

I know there are students who are just like me. They are smart but just need a little more attention. Together, the first step is to create goals. Next, we will develop strategies to help us reach those goals. Then the student will do the necessary task with supervision from the tutor (me!). Lastly, a review of the material learned will commence so that the information fossilizes.

Let's get started!

Other Information:

1) Almost all of my lessons are conducted through Wyzant's Online Tutoring Platform. It is normal and expected for parents and new students to be skeptical of the service; therefore, I'm happy to provide a free 10 minute demonstration at your convenience. I may travel to your home if the requested time and location are reasonable.

2) Out of respect for my time, I require a 24 hour notice policy for cancellation or rescheduling of lessons. Students who have "same day" cancellations or rescheduling will still be charged for the lesson. If cancellations or rescheduling is to occur, then it is imperative to do so before the day of the lesson.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics with a focus on teaching English as a second language. I worked for four years at the University of South Florida as an English tutor for international students. Many student would come to me for speaking practice, and this included how to speak publicly for school presentations. Together, the student(s) and me would review scripts, PowerPoint presentation, and rehearse the speeches. We would discuss important public speaking elements: eye contact, speech rhythm, intonation, body posture, and the cliche formula of "say what you're going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them".

Knowledgeable and attentive tutor

John did a great job establishing rapport and trust with our daughter as they have Identified greatest areas of need and a plan to meet them over the coming weeks. In only a couple of sessions, I see her confidence increase with helpful strategies and a renewed approach to tackling SAT math.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

John taught Mathematics and science to my 5th grader. John has a very strong understanding of all mathematics topics; currently he is teaching 6th grade algebra to my son and John brings his own books so that my son can do extra practice. He always have positive way of communicating his feedback on my son progress even when my son may be struggling. My son is always excited and happy when he is having a lesson with John.
