About Isabel

Hello,

I am a renaissance woman who has recently been working in the Middle East in art conservation, but have several years of full-time teaching experience, and have also worked as an artist, assistant director of a New York art gallery, publicity writer, puppet maker, public education intern at a major state museum, grant writer, and marketing director of a non-profit. My degree is from the University of Georgia, where I studied studio art and film theory. I am a strong writer, and have had work published in several literary journals, magazines, and newspapers. Additionally, I love to travel, read, dance, and laugh.

My most recent teaching experience involved teaching all fifth-grade subjects (English, Math, Science, Geography, and Art) and adult intermediate English at a private American school in Fes, Morocco. Prior to that I completed a competitive, year-long teaching fellowship in Southern Israel. While there, I taught in under-privileged elementary and high schools, primarily focusing on the English language and fine arts. Additionally, I also taught an adult English class at night. As part of my fellowship I attended workshops and training seminars at Talpiot Teacher's college.

I began tutoring students in various subjects when I was in high school (approx. ten years ago), both through private tutoring jobs and volunteer organizations such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and an ESL after-school program for indigent youth.

There are myriad ways to learn, and when I work with students I try to be creative and inventive in approaching subjects.

Learning shouldn't be a chore, and I try and bring humor and enthusiasm to every lesson.

I am available to assist with English language fluency, writing, reading comprehension, history, elementary-level math and science, drawing/painting, and test preparation.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I scored a 2100 on the SAT (760 in Reading, 710 in Writing, 12/12 on the Essay section, and 630 in Math). I've tutored and taught reading comprehension and writing skills to people of all ages and backgrounds, including leading elementary school creative writing classes and tutoring college-level essay writing. In high school I got 5's on all of my AP tests (English, Art, Biology, and U.S. History), and recently scored very highly on the verbal section of my GRE.

While I did not take the ACT in high school, I am familiar with the test format, and have helped students prepare for it previously.

ACT Reading

On standardized tests of this sort, I have routinely scored in the top 95%. I've tutored students of a variety of ages and levels in reading comprehension, including preparing students for the ACT.

Art History

I'm an artist who has studied studio art and art history at the University of Georgia, where I received my B.F.A. While there, I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Tuscany where I was able to immerse myself in Italian art history. I've worked in a variety of capacities within the art world since graduating, from gallery assistant and press writer, to public education assistant with the Georgia Museum of Art. I attend lectures and museum exhibitions regularly and am constantly reading and exploring new chapters in art history.

Drawing

I'm a painter and professional artist, with a B.F.A. in studio art. I've taught classes and workshops in art. I've studied, and taught, classical figure drawing, and am familiar with most traditional mediums (and many non-traditional ones as well!)

English

I've always been an avid reader, and had excellent grades in English, Literature, and Writing classes and exams. Professionally, I write press releases and art reviews for the gallery I work with that have been published in newspapers and art blogs. I've also had some of my creative writing published in literary journals.

I've tutored students of various ages through a public library, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and through an after school program for ESL elementary school students in a low-income community.

Painting

I'm a painter, who has exhibited work in prominent galleries, juried exhibitions, and international art shows. I received a BFA in studio art with an emphasis in drawing and painting from the University of Georgia in 2012. I studied a variety of techniques and mediums and have curated shows. Additionally, I have taught art classes and workshops. If you are interested in further qualifications, I will be happy to direct you to my web portfolio upon request.
