Lloyd was great! We discussed her issues prior to our meeting, and he was able to analyze her understanding of math based our conversation and reviewing a battery of test scores I had submitted to him. He was able to make connections because of his long history of being a proper math lover and real teacher. He was early for the session, and he started off the session by making my daughter feel very comfortable by finding out what her interests were- including art, and using art to connect with her to math. He reviewed some SSAT questions to check her actual results with his observations, and from working with her for about 30 minutes came up with a plan that he thought would work for her. He even stayed to help her with some Kumon that she was stuck on, and with doing just one problem with her- she was able to do all of the rest of the homework that she could not do. He made her feel confident because with Lloyd there is not just one way to arrive at an answer. He appreciated her methods and helped her work the problems from where her intuition led her- even if it was not exactly the way he would have done the problem. I liked that Lloyd spoke about trying to help my daughter who is extremely strong computationally discover the beauty of math which is what is missing from her experience. My daughter liked Lloyd a lot- she thought he was really nice and explained things very well.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
