About Sandee M

I realized at an early age the love of teaching and working with others and as a high school teenager, I volunteered during the summer and after school as a tutor in my neighborhood library. I delighted in working with young students as well as adults. That love transferred into selecting elementary education as my primary major, with a minor in sociology because of my true desire to work with and understand people.

I hold three post-high school degrees: a Bachelor's and two Masters of Education. During my 40+ year career, I have been successful as a teacher, school administrator, district administrator, and state department of education administrator. Now in my retirement years, I continue to pursue the personal goal of teaching and tutoring.

My areas of specialization include subjects: reading, language arts, math, study skills, and GED. I will incorporate state standards required by school districts, i.e., common core standards and No Child Left Behind skill support. I successfully teach Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten skills and instructional content for elementary and middle school grades. I will use challenging and creative approaches to learning with a focus on the necessary skills required for a particular subject and grade. I will personalize lessons.

Challenging assignments will be provided after each session with periodic assessments and progress reports. My standards have always been high and I will encourage feedback regarding a lesson or session. As a professional, I will always ensure the student and/or parent is satisfied with my tutoring.

Understanding that unexpected conflicts can occur, I have an 8 hour cancellation policy; however, makeup classes will be an option for legitimate cancellations.

My tutoring location would preferably be the local library allowing for a quiet and comfortable setting; I am willing to travel to an alternate location suggested by the student and/or parent if that location offers an equally quiet and comfortable setting.

I look forward to hearing from you and providing the best support towards helping you meet your instructional and academic goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I hold three post-high school degrees: a Bachelor's and two Masters of Education. The premise of Common Core is to give students the time to learn, practice and internalize their learning. Since the development of the Common Core Curriculum several years ago, my tutoring experiences with students has included the successful introduction, explanation and practice that there can be several right answers to most problems and several ways to solve the problems.

I teach students to share their thinking by explaining how they got their answers and to listen to me explain alternate answers to these same problems. I encourage speaking, listening, and thinking not just in the Reading and Math content, but also in the Science and Social Studies contents as well.

Dyslexia

I earned two master's degrees: one in reading and a second in a combination of early childhood education, special education, and administration. My first personal tutoring student was a first grader being home schooled. One of my most glowing testimonial is written by this student's mother. My past teaching experiences include many years of success working with dyslexic students within the classroom which was far more difficult than personal one-on-one tutoring.

It is important to me to involve several senses (hearing, seeing, touching) at the same time when tutoring these students. I believe, support and incorporate intense objectives for learning so that these individuals can move forward at their own pace, yet still maintaining their appropriate grade level.

I also incorporate alternative means of assessment to ensure the dyslexic student feels successful and not defeated.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a 40+ year career with education, specifically with elementary education. I was a classroom teacher for 9 years, a school-based assistant principal for 3 years, a district administrator for Title I compensatory programs for 2 years and an administrator at the state Department of Education for Compensatory Programs for 3 years. As a classroom teacher, I taught Kindergarten through Grade 6, all subject areas.

My teaching methods are personalized based on the student needs with focus on challenging yet creative activities and lessons. I am up-to-date on current teaching methods that support the national common core standards.

GED

My background of experience as a teacher is a strong fit with the instructional needs of individuals requiring success with passing the GED examination. I have expertise in improving academic success from early education through post-graduate certificates. I have used technology-based instruction as well as print-based to support all subject areas covered in the GED. I am confident and comfortable that I can work with students to improve and expand any weaknesses and capitalize on their strengths towards passing the GED exam.

Grammar

I taught reading and language arts, including writing and grammar, throughout my 40+ year career. I earned two master's degrees, one in reading, language arts and thus I have a significant number of different approaches to reading, writing, and grammar development. My background of experiences will be a comfortable fit to the tutoring requirements prescribed by the school or school district your student attends. I am familiar with the reading and language arts state standards and I have confidence that I can work with your student to improve and excel in these subjects.

Handwriting

As a former elementary school teacher, I have extensive experience with the formal standards of handwriting. I am familiar with the most current formats being used in schools, i.e., the D'Nealian and Zaner-Bloser handwriting styles for cursive and printing.

My use of standard printing and cursive writing will serve as a strong model for students during the tutoring sessions.

Although some districts are eliminating handwriting as formal elementary school content, I strongly believe it should continue as part of the curriculum structure.

Phonics

I taught elementary reading skills throughout my classroom tenure and used a number of reading series that focused on phonics as a reading process. Open Court Company was a highly approved standard for many years and I am proficient with the standards.

I have experience with many other phonics programs. Additionally, I have used independent programs that incorporated phonics and phonemic awareness as a support to No Child Left Behind.

I have confidence that I can tutor students using any phonics method as prescribed by the school or school district attended by the student.

Reading

I taught elementary reading skills throughout my classroom teaching years. I earned two master's degrees: one in reading and a second in a combination of early childhood education, special education, and administration. I have used a number of different approaches to reading development and will be able to comfortably tutor your child using any method as prescribed by the school or school district he attends. I am familiar with reading state standards, and I have confidence that I can work with your child to improve and excel in reading.

Spelling

I taught elementary reading/language arts skills throughout my classroom teaching years and with my expertise in teaching spelling within the language arts instructional strand, I feel confident that I can support academic success required by the local and state school curricula. I have used a number of different approaches to reading and spelling development and will be a comfortable fit towards meeting the objectives you define for your child. I am familiar with state standards and have confidence that I can work with your child towards improvement and success.

Study Skills

I believe strongly that success with academic instruction is based on developed study skills. I incorporate the specific types of studying, such as, scheduling, where to study, how to study for types of courses/subjects.

Also important, I incorporate strategies, such as the SQ3R technique used in many classrooms. Understanding how to take notes, how to take exams, and how to gather necessary materials in preparation for an exam as all important elements of good study habits that I have taught during my teaching and tutoring years.

Vocabulary

I taught vocabulary skills throughout my tenure as a teacher and used a number of teaching strategies. My background of experience includes Pre-Kindergarten through high school expertise working with students to improve their vocabulary development. Since each student is individualized in their learning style, I believe in customizing the instructional process to student needs. Whether a student requires the rote method of learning or developing vocabulary in context, I am a comfortable fit with the needs of your student.

What a blessing!

Ms. Sandee has been wonderful for my daughter. I highly recommend her to work with on reading. She is creative with a variety of tools and options. I have been impressed each week with what she brings and she is a highlight for my daughter each week. My daughter is making steady progress with reading and most importantly, her desire to learn has increased since we started tutoring.
