I was a university-sponsored tutor in college, working for the English department. In that role, I, along with other tutors in other subjects, tutored athletes who had failed to maintain a 2.0 average and could not play their respective sports. This effort often involved some initial attitudinal changing, reconciling the students to the need of learning to read and write with some proficiency in their native tongue. Often, elementary parts of English grammar had to be mastered before real composition work could begin. These fundamentals were often the hardest part of the subject for my football players to grasp, but with sufficient repetition, patience on the part of all concerned, and a learning-by-writing approach, most students managed a C at a minimum.
For composition, I avoid the use of such devices as the "sandwich" model of writing. I am a good cook, and fixing lunch is not writing. I believe that good reading is essential to good writing, and that the better the quality of the student's reading matter, the better will be the quality of his/her own writing. Thus, in writing as in athletics, we learn by doing what we see others doing. I also stress that, in the words of W. Somerset Maugham, "there is no such thing as good writing -- there is only good rewriting." That is, I emphasize working one's writings over and over, including such exercises as reading one's paper aloud to hear where the language becomes less than music to one's ears, and also, to notice when one's work has improved significantly.
As far as interpretation is concerned, the shape on the interpretive essay simply follows the shape of the literary work being explained, and the author of the poem, play, story, or novel has provided the student with the template for his/her critical paper, which simply retells the literary work along with comment and explication.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
