My name is Dana. I taught 6-8 grade English/Language Arts for five years, and after that, I taught high school American Literature, AP English, and Honors English for five years. I was voted Teacher of the Year in 2009-2010. I am a certified teacher in Georgia in secondary English.
I graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English and French (double major). I earned a Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
I believe that in order for you to learn from me, you must trust me. As we work, I will learn about YOU - both as a person and as a student - in a way that embraces and nurtures your strengths while compassionately addressing your challenges. While we'll start working with your presenting concern (the reason you sought out a tutor), I continuously look for ways to engage and challenge - but not overwhelm - you on your path to success in academics and in life.
I've always excelled on standardized tests. In high school, I earned a combined score of 34 on the ACT. I am a member of Mensa (which admits entrance based on success on an IQ exam). My GRE scores placed me in the 98th percentile for quantitative reasoning (math) and the 85th percentile for verbal reasoning; I scored a perfect 6 for writing. I will teach you my means of preparation and my test taking strategies so YOU can achieve the score you're after!
My greatest passion in life is writing. In addition to my own writing, I love helping others improve their written efforts whether it is a tricky essay for course in school, professional writing for a demanding job, or creative writing that you hope to publish, I love guiding writers through the writing process. If you would like help with your writing in an editorial capacity without in person tutorials, I provide line editing and content editing (for lower rates than my standard tutoring rate). Reach out to me and tell me what you're looking for - if I believe I can help you, I will do my very best to do so.
Recently, I was featured on "Better Mornings Atlanta" as a guest to promote Wyzant and the different ways it helps families and students succeed.
I deeply believe in the transformational power of education. I left full time teaching to pursue my lifelong dream of writing, but through tutoring, I stay connected with young people and get to use my gift for teaching to help them reach their maximum potential. There are few greater joys than watching a young person conquer a goal, and I love being part of that process.
Let's get started!

Dana painstakingly worked with my son for several weeks, and she was worth every penny. I was initially struck by her enthusiasm for what she was doing. That kind of enthusiasm transfers to students. Then she was very knowledgeable about what the SAT tested and picked up on my son's weaknesses very quickly and zeroed in on them. She was patient and motivating. I highly recommend her. My son just took the SAT exam and felt extremely positively about how he did.
Dana is a great tutor. My son really enjoyed working with her to prepare for the SSAT and then asked to work with her again on his actual application for the essay portion. She is great and very caring. While teaching them what they need to know-- her ability to relate to the kids and get them to respond in such a positive fashion was what we liked the most. My son did not mind going to see her for help. Thanks Dana for all your help!
9-2-14 Dana is tutoring my daughter for the SSAT and she is very organized in her approach, and encouraging of my daughter. I have a feeling the analytic skills Dana is teaching my daughter to use in SSAT will spill over into my daughter's school work as well. Dana knows how to keep the session on target, and is able to cover quite a bit of material. My daughter really enjoys working with her. Also, when Dana cannot arrive exactly on time, she has been willing to stay a little extra so my daughter gets the benefit of the full hour. A small thing, perhaps, but much appreciated.
10-1-14 I continue to be impressed with the way Dana keeps my daughter focused throughout the hour, and how, even though she is coaching her for the SSAT, she is teaching her skills about how to think through problems that will help her in school as well.
11-9-14. We have completed our tutoring sessions with Dana because the SSAT is this weekend. I'm very impressed by how well she worked with my daughter and the study skills she taught her. She brings a combination of warmth, fun and focus to each tutoring session. We would definitely hire Dana again.
We are so lucky to have her as a tutor. My child is motivated and looks forward to their lessons. My child feels that he is doing much better from the teachings, review and tips. With Dana's help, I am confident that my child will score much better on the ACT!
Dana helped me tremendously in one of my publications for Google Finance; in the capacity of an editor. Her knowledge on writing and effectively communicating my thesis to the audience was very impressive, even though the article's topic was out of her comfort zone. I will be using her again in the near future.
We love this young woman! She keeps my daughter motivated and interested in some fairly dry (SSAT prep) material. Somehow she makes it current and relevant. Great tutor.
1/14/14 Yet another fantastic tutoring session. My daughter comes away from an hour with Dana feeling so good about herself. Dana's "can do" attitude is contagious and empowers my daughter. She has turned my daughter's ADD into a benefit rather than a detriment. Such a positive and upbeat young woman. Very talented with young people.
I highly recommend L. She has been instrumental in making my son enthusiastic again about language arts. She guided him through tackling a big paper.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified teacher (Georgia, Secondary English grades 6-12), and as such, I have had coursework in the field of teaching students with special needs. ADD/ADHD is a predominant diagnosis in modern students, and I have taught countless students who struggle with its effects. Some have been learning under IEPS, some have simply had a physician's diagnosis, and some - most sadly - exhibited all the symptoms but had never been fully evaluated, leaving them to suffer with little extra help. I understand the triggers and distractors that impact a student's focus, and I can modify tutorial sessions to account for the ADD/ADHD student's learning style and attention struggles.
I taught high school for five years and have helped countless students as they navigate college writing. I have helped students prepare their college application essays, and I have helped many of my high school students succeed in their college writing classes once they go on to university.
I am a certified teacher (Georgia, Secondary English grades 6-12), and as such, I have had coursework in the field of teaching students with special needs. I have taught students with the following learning exceptionalities:
2. Specific LD
5. Significant gaps in basic knowledge/skills, students who are more than 5 years behind current grade level in reading/writing
I have worked with adolescent learners for over 10 years, many of whom struggle with organization, project management, prioritizing time and working within existing structural systems (school, classroom, etc). I design programs based on each student's strengths and challenges to empower each learner to be more successful and independent.
