About Malcolm

I am a Master's of Social Work candidate with over a decade of experience working with youth with special educational needs. As a tutor and academic coach, I aim to empower students to reach their full academic potential through gaining a better understanding of their own learning process. I work with students to improve their comprehension of course content and develop a toolkit of study skills they can apply to all academic work.

I offer content tutoring in English and literature, social studies (including economics, history, geography, and government), Spanish, and writing. When working with students on study skills and executive functioning, targeted areas for improvement include time management, academic organization, goal-setting, test-taking strategies, task initiation, self-advocacy, and self-reflection.

Tutoring sessions are one-on-one and are held at the student's home, online, or in another agreed-upon location. I am bilingual in English and Spanish. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been a tutor, mentor, and academic coach for students with ADD/ADHD for two years. I work 8-20 hours per week with each client. Previously, as a substitute teacher, after-school program assistant director, and camp counselor, I helped students with ADHD manage their impairments in classroom and extra-curricular settings.

To inform my support of youth with ADHD, I've independently studied the neurobiological roots of the disorder and the multi-modal approaches to treating it. The scholarly work of Dr. Russell A. Barkley, a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and internationally recognized authority on ADHD, has been a major resource for my studies.

American History

I love history and think it's a shame it's often taught in such a superficial, non-critical manner. Getting students excited about learning history is one of my favorite parts of my job. Through discussion and active reading activities, I encourage students to engage more deeply with the material. This improves their comprehension of course content and critical thinking skills. I have taught and tutored history to students in grades 4-12 and college. My experience includes all AP history courses.

College Counseling

As an academic mentor, I have counseled high school students from a variety of academic backgrounds through the college application process. I've coached them on researching colleges, compiling college lists, identifying "good fits," writing application essays, interviewing, and marketing themselves. I've also prepared students for the SAT and ACT and helped them schedule their test dates. As securing financial aid is a requisite for most prospective college students, I've advised students and parents on how to find scholarships and fill out the FAFSA and CSS Profile.

As an undergraduate, I worked in my college's office of admission for four years as a tour guide and campus visit coordinator. My senior year, I was selected as an Admission Fellow. I interviewed prospective candidates for admission, gave information sessions, prepared application files for admissions counselors, and attended college admission fairs as a representative of the college.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught specialty classes and core subjects for students in grades 1-6 at a well-regarded independent school for three-and-a-half years. My patience, passion for learning, and ability to present material creatively makes me a particularly engaging and effective elementary teacher. Younger students appreciate my youthfulness. I'm also able to meet them where they are by actively listening to their concerns and challenges with academic material.

English

English is one of my favorite subject areas to tutor! Whether we're working on building vocabulary, analyzing literature, or honing the writing process, I present the material in creative ways that resonate with the student. When students find relevance and meaning in what they're learning, it sticks a whole lot better! I think I'm particularly good at helping them do this.

Psychology

I am current graduate student in a clinical social work master's program with an emphasis on psychoanalytic practice. Additionally, I completed coursework in psychology as an undergraduate and tutored AP Psychology course material to high school students. Through these experiences, I have a thorough understanding of classical and contemporary concepts in psychology.

Sociology

As an undergraduate, I majored in Urban Studies: an interdisciplinary major that draws a lot of theory from sociology. I was required to take a sociology research methods course, be a participant-observer at community partner sites, and produce seminal essays about connecting sociological theory to practice.

I now tutor college students in all social and behavioral sciences coursework (including sociology). Areas of focus in these tutoring sessions include research skills, critical thinking skills, and thesis development.

Spanish

I learned Spanish in grade school and college classes, but gained fluency through living, studying, and working in Costa Rica and Argentina. I currently tutor Spanish to middle school, high school, and college students. I also substitute teach Spanish classes at independent schools.

Study Skills

As an academic mentor, I've spent a lot of time coaching my clients on study skills. Almost all of the students I've worked with have ADHD or some other executive functioning disorder. Therefore, developing a personal toolkit of study skills is critical to their academic success. I work with students to identify their strengths, impairments, and areas for improvement. Based on their self-reporting, academic performance history, teacher comments, and any psychoeducational assessment findings available, I design a curriculum to best support them. I have students set measurable goals for which I hold them accountable. Students who have worked with me have seen improvement in time management, academic organization, the writing process, identifying optimal study environments, test-taking strategies, self-advocacy, and self-evaluation and reflection.

Writing

I coach middle school, high school, and college students on the writing process, empowering them to be more self-directed and productive.
