About Anna

I graduated from NC State University in 2010 with degrees in Biological Sciences and History. I am currently a graduate student in Genetics and Molecular Biology at Emory University. I love teaching, and have previous experience tutoring many areas including chemistry, biology, English, civics and economics and social studies/history. I was also a substitute for Wake County Schools (Raleigh, NC). I am passionate about teaching my students new things, and helping them learn to study in a way that will help them be successful. I also love working with younger students; I have previously worked in summer camps with elementary through middle school aged children. I absolutely love this age group- they are so much fun to watch discover new things or master new concepts! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I performed well on the ACT after high school, and I have since taken several college level English courses and written dozens of high level history and science papers. I love to read, especially classic works. I am able to help students discern important sections from each chapter or paragraph to focus on the broader meaning of the text, while fitting in details where applicable.

ACT Reading

I performed well on the ACT after high school, and I have since taken several college level English courses and written dozens of high level history and science papers. I love to read, especially classic works. I am able to help students discern important sections from each chapter or paragraph to focus on the broader meaning of the text, while fitting in details where applicable.

American History

I am a history double major at NCSU, and in addition to receiving a 5 on the AP US History exam, I also recently completed a 400 level reading and research intensive American History course. My strategies for US History are flashcards and comprehensive timelines.

Autism

I am a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and have previously worked with children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). As part of my training, I was instructed through the NCI and Core trainings on teaching children with an IDD diagnosis. I have also worked with children with autism at the Greensboro Science Center in summer camps.

Biology

I am a Biology major at NCSU and have taken a wide variety of biology courses in college including basic and advanced human anatomy, microbiology, and biochemistry. I also earned a four on the AP Biology exam.

Chemistry

As a biology major, I have taken 20 hours worth of college chemistry, including basic, quantitative, and organic, and I have done very well. I also passed the AP Chemistry exam in high school.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a qualified K-6 tutor because I have worked with this age group at the Greensboro Science Center as a volunteer for 5 years and an employee for 3 years. I taught summer camps, reviewed lesson plans, and assisted in classrooms. I also taught "Science Nights" at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church to this age group, and I have worked with the Raleigh Boys and Girls Club to prepare lesson plans and teach their campers on Saturdays.

Elementary Science

I love teaching kids science! I have worked at the Greensboro Science Center for 3 years as an assistant and teacher in summer science camps. I have lots of science based lesson plans already prepared and love to see the excitement from kids learning science for the first time!

English

I performed well on the ACT and SAT after high school, and I have since taken several college level English courses and written dozens of high level history and science papers. I love to read, especially classic works. I am able to help students discern important sections from each chapter or paragraph to focus on the broader meaning of the text, while fitting in details where applicable.

Genetics

I am a PhD student in Genetics and Molecular Biology at Emory University. I also have an undergraduate minor in genetics.

Government & Politics

I love studying government and politics. In high school, I did very well in Civics and AP US history. In college, I have taken several classes in ancient history regarding the formation of various types of government, with an emphasis on the Athenian democracy. I have also taken American and Revolutionary history, and have spent a lot of time studying the framework of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and other relevant documents. My strategies for these subjects include a variety of notecards, flow charts, and going over practice questions.

Literature

I performed well on the ACT and SAT after high school, and I have since taken several reading intensive college level English courses and written dozens of high level history, English and science papers. I love to read in my spare time, and have countless strategies to help student pick out key points and take effective notes on long works.

Microbiology

I earned an A in college microbiology recently, and have also taken two courses in biotechnology that provided me with a strong microbiology background. My study strategies for microbiology included notecards and colorful charts.

Proofreading

I performed well on the ACT after high school, and I have since taken several college level English courses and written dozens of high level history and science papers. I love to read, especially classic works. I am able to help students discern important sections from each chapter or paragraph to focus on the broader meaning of the text, while fitting in details where applicable.

R

I am a graduate student in Genetics and Molecular Biology, and my graduate work focuses a lot on bioinformatics. I have taken graduate courses in programming in R and bioinformatics, as well as several short courses in programming.

World History

I am history major at NCSU and have taken a variety of world history courses, including Early Modern European History, African History survey, American History, Ancient Greek History, and Chinese and Korean history and music. I also scored well on the AP World History Exam in high school. My study strategies include mnemonics for difficult dates and rulers, flashcards, detailed timelines and help with each essay type for the AP exam.

Writing

I performed well on the ACT and SAT after high school, and I have since taken several writing intensive college level English courses and written dozens of high level history, English, and science papers. For my current coursework, I do a lot of research and reports, so I have come up with a lot of strategies to make writing papers easier and more coherent, such as taking well labeled notes with the page number for each citation, and condensing wordy sentences into phrases with more meaning.
