My background is in the field of history. I graduated from Georgia State University with a BA in History, and went on to graduate school at George Washington University. I recently graduated with a Master's in American Studies. During my residence in Washington, DC I worked at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History (NMAH). I conducted a variety of historical research in graduate school and at the Smithsonian, my most interesting assignment was a study of chocolate in American history.
In addition to my history experience, I have tutored elementary school children in literacy (reading, writing, phonics, and vocabulary) at Washington, DC public schools. I have passed the GACE (Georgia Assessment for the Certification of Educators) in world history and psychology for middle and high school age students.
I provide an interactive learning experience that will help students connect to the material and the lessons. My specific methods will vary according to the student's needs and learning styles.
Looking forward to working with you!! Hi,

My son is very bright but not the most diligent student. He is a taking AP World History as a freshman. I wanted a tutor to help him learn to study properly. He has an excellent grade in the class; however, I was concerned that he would not be properly prepared to take the AP Exam in May. To say he reluctantly agreed to a trial session is an understatement. He absolutely loves Melissa and looks forward to their sessions. Please note that he is not always prepared, e.g. completed all of the reading prior to the session. Melissa; however, is VERY PREPARED for each session and she is patient. I jokingly told her that she is shoveling information into his head. He tells me that she makes the material interesting and fun. Furthermore, there is a marketed improvement in his grade. I highly recommend Melissa.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
