About Karim

Hi! My name is Karim. I graduated from Emory University with a B.S. in Biology and Psychology and am currently working on my MD/MPH at Emory and MCG. My hobbies and interests include: singing, music, working out, and watching shows like Game of Thrones, House of Cards, South Park, and Parks and Rec.

I have several years of experience tutoring and mentoring children ages 5-11 in math, reading, and writing. During my year off after college, I tutored and developed curriculum for C2 Education, specifically for SAT and ACT math and science. I also have extensive informal experience tutoring and mentoring my friends in general and organic chemistry, biology, human physiology, microbiology, as well as general study skills. I have also helped my friends with college, medical, and dental school admissions essays. I am a very organized and goal-oriented individual who always tries to work as efficiently as possible. The catch phrase I've adopted from my 8th grade algebra teacher is "Work smarter, not harder." When learning concepts, I don't just try to memorize the material-though that is the basis of learning any material. But I always try to connect different concepts together to grasp the larger picture and really get a thorough understanding of the material, allowing me to reason through not only problems I've seen before, but also through ones I haven't. I apply the same philosophy when helping others. I often ask questions to grasp others' understanding of certain material and guide them with their thinking process using diagrams, hand gestures/models, and deductive reasoning. This way I help others to really form a concrete understanding of the material and formulate solutions on their own rather than me just telling them the answers. But of course, sometimes it takes some hints to help them get started, and I am always happy to provide them when I can. I promise to do my very best to help you achieve your academic goals while also having fun through the learning process. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have several years worth of experience working with young children and teaching them elementary reading, writing, science, and mathematics. I have a strong foundation of these basic subjects and would love to help anyone struggling in any of these areas. I recently graduated from Emory University with a B.S. in Biology and Psychology.

MCAT

I took the MCAT last year and scored a 33 (90th percentile) on the test. I scored a 11 (90th percentile) out of 15 on Biological Sciences, which includes organic chemistry and general biology, and a 14 out of 15 (98th percentile) on Physical Sciences, which covers physics and general chemistry. I would love to tutor anyone needing help in the physical sciences or biological sciences sections. The test requires not only memorizing extensive amounts of information, but also using smart strategies to obtain corrects answers as quick as possible. Given the extensive amount of preparation I've done for the test, I can help you to accomplish both of these things and do well on the test!

Microbiology

I took a semester of microbiology during college and got an A in the class. I also had to thoroughly review microbiology for the MCAT, so I have a fairly strong grasp of the material.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken a full year of organic chemistry at Emory University. Even though I was extremely busy with my extracurricular activities that year, I attained an A- and B+ in the class for the two semesters. I then also thoroughly reviewed the material while preparing for the MCAT, which further strengthened my comprehension and retention of the material. I obtained a 33 (90th percentile) on my MCAT. I absolutely LOVE organic chemistry and would be delighted to tutor students in the subject.

Study Skills

I have exceptional study skills and habits and am a very organized and goal-oriented individual. I most often work according to my priorities to ensure I always meet deadlines for assignments and don't forget to complete any tasks assigned to me. I would love to help any students needing any sort of advice/tips/help with study skills and general work ethic related questions!
